Bean Dog and Nugget: The Cookieby Charise Mericle Harper
Using simple text and cartoon-style illustrations, Charise Mericle Harper introduces young readers to a new graphic novel series, Bean Dog and Nugget. These two engaging characters capture young kids' actions, reactions, conversations, imagination, and humor with spot-on accuracy. Kids will want to follow Bean Dog and Nugget and their adventures in each and every book in the series. In The Cookie, book two in this series, Bean Dog and Nugget argue about who will get the bigger half of a cookie. They try to outwit each other by all sorts of imaginative means--but they find out that what really counts in the end is friendship.
Gr 2–4—Bean Dog and Nugget play a variety of good-spirited tricks on each other. In this book, Bean Dog says he'd like to know what it is like to be invisible so he asks Nugget to close her eyes-and then he eats the bigger half of the cookie they were about to share. The pages are well spaced and the vocabulary is easy enough for young readers. There is not much action from panel to panel, though, and the simple illustrations mean that each panel looks a lot like the one before it. The characters are not well defined-readers assume that Bean Dog is an anthropomorphized Hot Dog and Nugget is a nugget of some sort, but the childlike illustrations do not provide much insight. With the limited color palette and lack of action, this title relies entirely on dialogue to entertain.—Liz Zylstra, County of Prince Edward Public Library, Picton, Ontario

Wow! You hit the nail on the head with this new series Bean Dog and Nugget! My son is 6 (just finishing up 1st grade) and he read both of them as soon as I handed them over to him. Then the next day he brought them into school to share and ALL the kids went nuts over them. He showed everyone his "favorite" parts and then he had to bring them home because they caused such a stir. He is begging for more! It is so hard to find good reading at this level that also makes the kids laugh. Thank you so much! Bring on #3 & #4!
