Children's LiteratureBig things are in the works in the small town of Bean, Pennsylvania. A picture show man is coming to town to choose a person for his new movie. Usually Bean is a very calm town, but this picture show business brings out some very unusual behavior in the townspeople. When the big day finally arrives, the town is shocked to learn that the most unlikely person has been chosen. Set in the early 1900's, this story will transport young readers back to a time when movies were called picture shows, cars were relatively new inventions, and messages are sent on a telegraph instead of through email. Young readers will also be entertained by all of the humorous experiences that can occur in a small town. Even though the setting may be different from today, readers will definitely see a connection to their own lives. 2004, Kids Can Press, Ages 5 to 10.
