Overview

There are families like the Beans all over America. They live on the wrong side of town in mobile homes strung with Christmas lights all year around. The women are often pregnant, the men drunk and just out of jail, and the children too numerous to count. In the 'Beans of Egypt', Maine, we meet the God-fearing Earlene Pomerleau and experience her obsession for the whole swarming Bean tribe. Therecousin Rubie, a boozer and a brawler, tall Aunt Roberta, the earth mother surrounded by countless, clinging babies, and Beal, sensitive, often gentle, but doomed by the violence within him.

"Her eye...for detail is superb, and her portrait of rural life and people are as vivid as anything in Steinbeck or Caldwell." -- Detroit News

Great srory Great story, atrocious formatting

Loved the novel, and hope you will too. But shame on whatever lazy publisher obviously scanned a hard copy of this book and didn't bother to have a copy editor read through and clean up the many, MANY typographic errors and artifacts that resulted. Sloppy.

    Very interesting

While my views are in exact contrast to the author's, there is no denying that she is a great writer who knows how to craft an interesting story. Highly recommended, not for the faint of heart.

    MEMORABLE! Very, very memorable!

My daughter and I both read The Beans and LeTourneau's Used Auto Parts in the 80's when they first came out. We have kind of a secret language between us to describe things we see now. People have no idea what Bean people are, but we do. We have a collection of pictures from all over the country of trailers preferably with blue xmas lights on them that we have collected. My daughter now lives in a trailer and the first thing she did was put up the lights. She even has two dogs under the porch. Belated THANKS! to Ms. Chute for a very good, at least to us, book!

    Love the Beans

You have to love the Beans, you just don't want to live next door to them. A good book, fun to read, amusing and depressing. Great characters. A fun way to spend some time in a comfy chair with some coffee or tea. I should read more by her.

    To be Served With Cornbread

In her diatribe on rural life in Maine Ms. Chute touches a chord that resonates across this land, called the U.S.of A. Her words emulsify the sheer and utter hopelessness people find themselves in by the misfortune of birth and circmstance. Her characters ring true and it was as if I found myself revisiting the rural insanity we found when we moved from the city. Don't be fooled by the rural setting though. This book is life as it is, has been and will be in rural, suburbia and city environs. Not for the squimish but a must read for the seekers of truth.
