Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Beany is worried about being a flower girl in the wedding of her favorite cousin Amy. First, her pushy friend Carol Ann tells her what might go wrong, taunts her into wearing her new dress to school where it nearly is ruined, and threatens not to let her join the Flower Girl Club. Then, so many things go wrong for her at the rehearsal dinner that she confesses to Amy that she can't be a flower girl tomorrow. But Amy earns her favorite stripes by sharing her own butterflies and helping Beany to a fine conclusion. A strong cast of secondary characters, believable incidents such as deciding what to give the bride and choosing a not-too-awful dress, and just enough tension to keep readers reading makes this an excellent choice for girls who enjoy realistic fiction. For those who enjoy Beverly Cleary's Ramona stories, the "Beany" series is just the ticket. Natti's black line drawings, nearly one to a page, break up the longish chapters (25-30 pages) and present Beany as a winsome middle elementary-age heroine. 2000, Candlewick, Ages 7 to 10, $15.99. Gr 2-4-This latest installment about the irrepressible youngster is sure to appeal to her fans as well as to readers craving more Ramona Quimby-type books. Although Beany isn't quite up there with Beverly Cleary's famous character, Wojciechowski does have a solid grasp of modern-day children. Beany can't wait to be a flower girl in her favorite cousin's wedding. Actually, she's excited and scared at the same time. What if she has to wear a really ugly dress? What if she throws out all the flower petals before she gets to the end of the aisle? Beany's worries and concerns are endless. As readers will discover, Beany's best friend, Carol Ann, is a fount of not-so-helpful information. Still, most of the child's fears turn out to be unfounded and even the minor scrapes she gets herself into turn out fine. This young heroine proves to readers that things are rarely as bad as they might anticipate.-Julie G. Kirkus Reviews
This latest Beany adventure (Beany [Not Beanhead] and the Magic Crystal, 1997, etc.) has all the ingredients that made Wojciechowski's previous tales such rousing successes. Being the flower girl in her favorite cousin's wedding has the anxietyridden Beany in a tizzy. Cousin Amy is the next best thing to a sister for Beany, so despite her many misgivings, Beany is determined to do the job properly. With the wedding several months away, she has plenty of time to ponder the many pitfalls that lurk ahead. In typical Beanyfashion, she worries about what she will wear, walking down the aisle, getting the perfect wedding present, and a multitude of other fears. Yet, Beany is full of pluck and determined to meet her troubles headon. As always, Wojciechowski's writing rings true. Beany's concerns, ruminations, and antics are grounded in reality, revealing an innate understanding of young gradeschool readers, who can readily relate to Beany's keen yet comical observations. "Carol Ann is my best friend because we live on the same street and sit next to each other on the school bus, but sometimes I don't really like her that much." There are plenty of mishaps to keep readers laughing, such as Beany's lemonade enterprise, which endures a hasty demise at the paws of the neighborhood canine menace. Natti's blackandwhite sketches, highlighting Beany's misadventures, are a comical counterpart to the text. Fans and newcomers alike will be rooting for Wojciechowski's intrepid heroine as she tackles her anxieties with grit and fortitude. (Fiction. 79)

Meet the Author

Susan Wojciechowski recalls that the inspiraiton for Beany came when she was in bed with a cold. "Beany just stayed there and by the time I was well, the stories were written."

Susanna Natti says that when it came to drawing Beany, she found the right model in a friend of her daughter's. "This child is going to be a wonderful actress someday."
