Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bonita Herold
Bear hunting has taken place in our country since its very beginning. Bear fat was used to light lamps and cook. Hides made excellent clothes and blankets. Bones turned into tools. Of course, all bears can be difficult to hunt, both because of their ability to hide and their size. The biggest black bear ever documented weighed 802.5 pounds! This book covers the gamut from choosing the proper gun and ammunition to tracking to baiting to understanding the importance of conservation. This book is not for everyone, though. Similar to Pheasant Hunting for Kids in the series “Into the Great Outdoors,” this one, obviously, also emphasizes hunting with guns. Of course, even the thought of bear hunting can be pretty exciting. That is where reading comes in! The book, like the others in the series, has dramatic photographs, such as that depicting a blood trail. Many elementary and middle grade students would appreciate having this series in their science classrooms. Reviewer: Bonita Herold; Ages 8 to 14.
