Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It is hard to resist Pooh. The round, cuddly Bear—as illustrated by the Disney artists—is featured in a simple story just perfect for emerging readers to tackle. Using only 12 words in a varying rhyme and repetition pattern, the reader follows Pooh on an adventure with a honey pot and some pesky bees. The full-page illustrations give a visual clue that supports the text and the small size of the book makes it ideal for small hands. Children will gain confidence as they begin to recognize common words, similar sounds, and letter patterns. The twelve words are repeated in a double-column spread at the end. While not inspired literature, preschoolers or newly-independent readers will find these "Pooh Adorables" will make reading practice fun. 2005, Random House, Ages 3 to 5.

PreS-Gr 1-In 12 different words, this early reader attempts to tell a story about Winnie the Pooh and his typical day. However, it is disjointed and lacks cohesion. The colorful illustrations extend the staccato text (a picture of a yawning Pooh about to trip over a ball on the steps accompanies the text "Bear on stair") but, on the whole, this book of phrases is uninspired.-Anne Knickerbocker, formerly at Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
