Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This collection of historical narratives details human encounters and fascination with California grizzly bears from before the European conquest through the last sightings of the creatures in the early 20th century. Ranging in length from a few sentences to several pages, the excerpts recount grizzly hunting, attacks, and exhibitions (including bear fights), along with tales of mountaineer "Grizzly" Adams and other early settlers and naturalists. What makes this book unique is the inclusion of the 150 illustrations drawn from the archives and collections of the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, where Snyder is a librarian and cocurator of an exhibit from which the book developed. These early advertisements, newspaper illustrations, sheet music, photographs, fruit-crate labels, and other materials reflect the legendary status that this animal achieved and still holds in the Golden State. While this volume is appropriate for libraries with Californiana or California history collections, other libraries wanting a more in-depth history of grizzlies in the state can turn to Tracy Storer's California Grizzly, still in print after 40 years.-Alvin Hutchinson, Smithsonian Inst.
