KIRKUS REVIEWS
a bare introduction for the youngest learners

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL
Collages rendered in vibrant hues lead youngsters through a fanciful expedition....Beginning readers might like to attempt this one on their own.

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan
For many young children, bears are a favorite animal, if only for their irresistibly fun to-replicate growl. But beyond the fact that they are big, furry, and noisy lie many interesting traits that vary according to the type of bear. From Grizzly bears to Spectacled bears, Moon bears to Sun bears and many in between, learn a little about their habitats, diet, and how baby bears grow. The brief phrases with a gentle rhyming cadence are accompanied by charming paint and collage illustrations, and words and pictures alike are simple enough not to be overwhelming, while colorful and beautiful enough to be sure to capture the interest of both the child and the adult reader. A simple map in the back of the book illustrated in the same attractive collage style, shows the native habitat of each species of bear, and the dust jacket itself folds out to a large color poster of the map for further investigation. A great choice for your classroom while learning about bears, maps, or different species of animals, or in your home for the child who just loves to imitate the bear's growl! Reviewer: Carly Reagan

PreS-Gr 1—Collages rendered in vibrant hues lead youngsters through a fanciful expedition. The colorful spreads and rhyming text will entertain children as they discover the variety of bears found around the world. Similar to the author's Penguins, Penguins, Everywhere! (Chronicle, 2007), the rhymes include information about the animals ("Black bears doze in snowy winter sleep."). Two concluding spreads contain facts about bears and ursine habitats. ("Grizzly Bear Cubs grow up to be 9 feet tall and 1,000 pounds." "Black bears live in the mountains and woodlands of North America.") In the last one, the color-coded paw prints containing the facts correspond with the different continents on a map. Beginning readers might like to attempt this one on their own.—Melissa Smith, Green Valley Library, Henderson, NV

A survey of eight bear species, some familiar, others likely to be new to readers. "Bears! Bears! Bears! / I want to see a world of bears." The gently rhyming text introduces readers to a single fact about each of the bears, most having to do with habits or diet: "Giant pandas munch bamboo with a snap. / Spectacled bears cuddle up for a nap." Other highlighted species include polar, sun, grizzly, sloth, moon and black bears. As with many of his titles, Barner's brilliantly colored collages outshine the text. His furry, cuddly bears will have broad appeal. Backmatter includes a spread of baby-bear facts, one for each species, and a map showing the bears' global locations, with color-coded pawprints indicating range. Removed and unfolded, the dust jacket becomes a "Bears of the World" poster featuring an enlarged version of this map. With its relative paucity of facts, this is more of a bare introduction for the youngest learners than a book for established bear enthusiasts. (Informational picture book. 2-6)
