Children's Literature - Mary Sue Preissner
Swanson brings bears to the reader in a delightful way, with charming and excellent photographs to accompany lively text. Spreads contain either a full-color photo related to the text on the opposing side, or a smaller photo with text and colorful sidebar which imparts the "bear facts." It is clear that the mother bear is solely responsible for the growth and development of her cubs. Food, communication, and shelter are among the many topics tackled here. The author compares the size of a newborn cub to a guinea pig, which I believe will be understandable to most young readers; however, her comparison of the size of an adult bear to a man may be less clear. Part of the "Welcome to the World of Animals" series.
