Part of the "Look Inside" series, its publisher gives this board book a suggested age range of 2 to 5. As it is a first wordbook, and each two-page spread offers only one word, that would seem to be expanding the book's options a little optimistically. "Monkey," "Teddy," "moon," "slippers," and "book" are good words, but they are generally in the vocabulary of most toddlers. The series' principle innovation is in adding a pop-up picture to the final spread, although it's called here a foldout. Cabrera's acrylic colors are bright, and her animals are charming. Her hand-lettering is big and easy to read. On first encounter, the foldout has the surprise element of a jack-in-the-box.
