Overview

Two inviting board books illustrate a single word on each page - then put them all together in a surprise pop-up ending.

Children love to learn the words that correspond to special objects in their life - and so do Bear and Monkey! BEAR'S GOOD NIGHT follows Bear in a sequence of cheery scenes - riding on Monkey, holding a look-alike teddy, gazing at the moon, showing off his plaid slippers, and absorbed in a picture book. This time the final spread merits a double take, as a sleeping Monkey and Bear pop up in bed with the teddy, slippers, and book strewn around them - under a quilt that looks like the real night sky with its crescent moon.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publishers Weekly
Animals introduce a series of first words in Monkey's Play Time and Bear's Good Night, both by Jane Cabrera. In the first, colorful illustrations feature Monkey cavorting with "Bear," "Dog" and "Sheep." A foldout spread wraps it up, revealing all the friends aboard a big horse. In the second, Bear cozies up with "Monkey," "Teddy" and "book." (May) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Part of the "Look Inside" series, its publisher gives this board book a suggested age range of 2 to 5. As it is a first wordbook, and each two-page spread offers only one word, that would seem to be expanding the book's options a little optimistically. "Monkey," "Teddy," "moon," "slippers," and "book" are good words, but they are generally in the vocabulary of most toddlers. The series' principle innovation is in adding a pop-up picture to the final spread, although it's called here a foldout. Cabrera's acrylic colors are bright, and her animals are charming. Her hand-lettering is big and easy to read. On first encounter, the foldout has the surprise element of a jack-in-the-box. As board books go, it's not a bad addition to the overworked genre. 2002, Candlewick,
