Meet the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."

Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.  They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.  There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

My mom loves this book..

This sweet, simplistic story of baby bears hearing sounds in the night and going to investigate is something I read to my children when they were young. It teaches them memory sequences as well. I purchased this for my 2 year old grandson.

You can't go wrong with the Berenstain Bears. Teachers, it is a great read aloud to introduce the concept of prepositions for any grade level.

As an English teacher, I have used Bears in the Night, along with other children's books by the Berenstains, Dr. Seuss and the like, to help students understand parts of speech. Bears in the Night focuses on prepositions. He Bear, She Bear is great for pronouns. I have had students work with partners to find adjectives in Dr. Seuss's books. The possibilities are endless. Even high school seniors enjoy learning grammar by using books from childhood.

My sister and now my daughter both have made this the first book they ever read by themselves. It is simple but fun enough for children to read over and over again. It's been wonderful for the 2.5yo and up children in the family!

This has been my favorite book for 33 years! I remember my parents reading it to me. My two children ask for it nightly! A fun book!

I read this book over and over as a child. I am so happy that my children can read this book too. Even after 25+ years I can still remember the whole story word for word.

I really think that this should be a story that every child should know. It is a heart-warming tale.

The format is pretty lousy on the nook. I highly recommend you buy the real book, but skip the nook version.

This book is all about the illustrations and they are tiny and of poor viewing quality on the Nook!
