All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Screenwriter/director Daniel Barnz's Beastly is a modern-day retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story, and it has generated two soundtrack albums, one featuring Marcelo Zarvos' background score and this "songs from the motion picture" various-artists collection of pop

There appears to have been an attempt to cover the bases of current rock, coming up with derivative tracks such as Hanover Swain's "Vanity," a Lady Gaga sound-alike, and two songs by Raney Shockne featuring Jessie Mann that suggest Britney Spears. Mat Kearney's 2007 copyright "Breathe In, Breathe Out" is in a Coldplay/U2 mode, while Kristina & the Dolls' "Be Mine" recalls the goth rock of Evanescence and Army Navy's "The Long Goodbye" is a piece of catchy jangle pop. There's nothing very original here, but the hope is that a hit may emerge, if only through imitation of what's currently popular.
