Overview

"My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel," said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; "in the meantime you must try and put up with me." So begins "The Open Window" one of Saki's most famous stories. Saki, born Hector Hugh Munroe, wrote about characters with, sometimes, a sadistic cruel streak in them. It was his way of commenting on the people of Edwardian times. In doing so, he has sometimes been considered more macabre than Kipling.

Meet the Author

Hector Hugh Munro (1870 - 1916), better known by the pen name Saki and also frequently as H. H. Munro, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirize Edwardian society and culture. He is considered a master of the short story and is often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Besides his short stories (which were first published in newspapers, as was customary at the time and then collected into several volumes), he wrote a full-length play, The Watched Pot, in collaboration with Charles Maude; two one-act plays; a historical study, The Rise of the Russian Empire, the only book published under his own name; a short novel, The Unbearable Bassington; the episodic The Westminster Alice (a parliamentary parody of Alice in Wonderland); and When William Came, subtitled A Story of London Under the Hohenzollerns, a fantasy about a future German invasion and occupation of Britain.

If you can put up with the weird spelling it's not bad. It uses very odd combinations to represent letters that should be used. For example u in place of ll, but just when you think you've cracked the code it changes and you're back at square one. For instance, I came across this word "pajdng." Now what the hell is that? The closest I can come is maybe, paying, but who knows.
