Even the briefest scan of Jeffrey Masson's bibliography offers an ample sense of his favorite subject. The author of Dogs Never Lie About Love, Why Elephants Weep, and The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats has never made a secret of his preoccupations with the emotions, intelligence, and, yes, even the ethics of other species. Masson does not condescend to pets or wild creatures; indeed, he notes that no animal kingdom "beast" can match our killing record: 200 million humans slaughtered in the twentieth century alone. His close, tender scrutiny of the caring attributes of supposedly lesser animals will hearten all those who value our natural world. Editor's recommendation.
