Overview

The worldwide bestseller that defines the band that defined an era—now updated and with 135 photographs and illustrations.
In this behind-the-scenes look at the most famous musical group in history, Hunter Davies gives the complete story of the Beatles. As the only authorized biographer, Davies had full access to the group, as well as their help and encouragement. He spent eighteen months with them when they were at the peak of their musical genius and at the pinnacle of their popularity, and he remained friends with each of the members as they went their separate ways.
This updated edition addresses the changes in the lives of the Beatles: Paul's marriage, George's death, and their new books and records.

Editorial Reviews

Marshall McLuhan
“A document of our century.”
Newsweek
“[Davies’s] hard work and the obvious trust the Beatles have in him allow us to see the young musicians for the first time as interesting, fallible, corporeal creatures, each quite different from the others, each with his own history and hang-ups and hopes.”

Originally published in 1968, this is a revised and updated edition of the band's authorized biography. (Oct.)
Library Journal
Since their breakup in 1969, the only band that has managed to become bigger than the Beatles is...the Beatles. Their inestimable number of fans have not been willing to let it be, and the release of the three Anthology double CD sets has put the group right back on top. amazingly, their recordings sell more copies now than at the height of Beatlemania. Written in 1968, this was the only official portrait of the group that was produced with their cooperation. For this revision, Davies has included a new introduction and three updated appendixes of Beatles places, memorabilia, and books. Though works on the band are legion, this remains one of the best. This is by far THE best biography ever written on the Beatles. Originally written in 1968, every single Beatles bio that has come since has borrowed judiciously from this book. That is because Hunter Davies had complete access to the band and conducted hundreds of interviews with the fabs, their families, childhood friends and Pete Best. Most of these people are no longer with us and they add to a side of the Beatles legend that shows the group as mere mortals and less of the Gods they viewed as today. He is also the only Beatles¿ author to have written his book while the Beatles were still together at the height of their powers. There is an entire chapter devoted to John and Paul writing songs for the ¿Sergeant Pepper¿s Lonely Hearts Club Band¿ LP. It is fascinating to be a fly on the wall and watch the Lennon/McCartney song writing process as it unfolds. Getting a window into the creative process of one of the best song writing teams of the 20th century is highly entertaining. Nothing is glossed over in this book either. The use of drugs by the band are not hidden and it is easy to read between the lines about Brian Epstein¿s private life. I say skip the more recent books written on the Beatles and go directly to this one. This biography will be the only one you will ever need
