Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Lovers of Miss Tiggy-Winkle, Flopsy and Squirrel Nutkin have ready access to these charmers in today's market. Collections of Potter's work abound from discount department stores to exclusive children's bookshops. So what sets this volume apart? The slow-paced, uncluttered layout, from the padded cover's illustration through the final page, fits Potter's text and illustrations as well as Peter's blue jacket, quite new, fits Mr. McGregor's scarecrow. Nursery rhymes and riddles, each in large print, get their own page, with facing full-page illustration. Here is a book to be savored. It even feels good in the hand. This nursery rhyme collection will be bought by grandmothers and baby shower attendees, as well as teachers and parents who grew up with toads taking tea, hedgehogs ironing and mice doing needlework. With winsome characters drawn by Potter herself, does it matter if children have never heard of a tansy cake, periwig or kyloe cow? No, the rhythm and texture of phrases such as, "honey-dew for sugar/in a cuckoo-pint of milk," or "As I went over Tipple-time/I met a flock of bonny swine" are too lush for practical definition. 2000 (orig. 1903), Frederick Warne/Penguin. Ages 1 up. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
Children's Literature - Wendy Ricci
This bookbrings together favorite classic poems taken from various Beatrix Potter collections. Potter's own sketches and watercolors, reproduced using the latest in printing technology, complement the poetry. Young children will enjoy these delightful rhyming tales that have withstood the test of time.
