Overview

Juliana Hatfield's baby must have done a bad, bad thing. On the sister albums BEAUTIFUL CREATURE and TOTAL SYSTEM FAILURE (credited to Juliana's Pony), she delineates the desperation, frustration, and anger that love produces. The albums suggest a matched pair of binary opposites -- fragile/strong, love/hate, forgiveness/revenge, vulnerability/power, heartbroken/heartbreaker -- although Hatfield's too smart a writer and too astute an observer to make the divisions clear and simple. BEAUTIFUL CREATURE, the more polished and accessible of the two albums, draws on Hatfield's singer-songwriter side and tends toward radio-friendly hooks ("Somebody Is Waiting for Me") and acoustic ballads ("Until Tomorrow"). Even when an underlying bitterness haunts the lyrics, BEAUTIFUL CREATURE is a sweetly melodic and catchy album. TOTAL SYSTEM FAILURE, on the other hand, is blunt and uncompromising and dwells on the anger and disasters that love can produce. On BEAUTIFUL CREATURE, she may have been desperate for the "Cool Rock Boy," but on TOTAL SYSTEM FAILURE she mocks his "Leather Pants" ("Do you realize you look stupid?"). Hatfield plays all the guitars on this one, and they're loud, electric, and heavy, as in heavy metal; Hatfield's Pony is a classic power trio, with Weezer's Mikey Welsh on bass and Zephan Courtney on drums. The albums are available separately, but this limited edition double set adds a CD with a remix of BEAUTIFUL CREATURE's "When You Loved Me," a cover of the Police's "Every Breath You Take," a screensaver, a letter from Hatfield, and additional artwork and photos.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The two albums Juliana Hatfield released individually in the spring of 2000 -- Beautiful Creature and Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure -- were also released as a set, containing both records. For the true fan -- and anyone following Hatfield in 2000 is -- this the smarter, more economical purchase, although it puts the flaws of Total System Failure in sharper relief.
