Meet the Author

Margaret Marshall Saunders (1861-1947) was a Canadian author. Saunders was born in the village of Milton, Nova Scotia, though she spent most of her childhood in Berwick, Nova Scotia where her father was a Baptist minister. Saunders is most famous for her novel Beautiful Joe. It tells the true story of dog that has had a difficult puppyhood with many obstacles including a cruel owner. It is told from the dog's point of view. When the book was published in 1893, both the book and its subject received worldwide attention. It was the first Canadian book to sell over a million copies, and by the late 1930s had sold over seven million copies worldwide. In 1934, Saunders was made a Commander of the British Empire (C.B.E.), at the time her country's highest civilian honor. Together with fellow Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Saunders co-founded the Maritime branch of the Canadian Women's Press Club. Following the success of Beautiful Joe, Saunders wrote more than twenty other stories, a number of which provided social commentary on such things as the abolition of child labor, slum clearance, and the improvement of playground facilities. Saunders died in 1947 in Toronto, Ontario where she had lived for a number of years.

My grandparents owned a copy of this book, and I remember reading it almost every time I went there to spend the night....and crying my eyes out every time. I now own my own copy.

I read this book about 35 years ago and have never forgotten it. When my nieces & nephews were old enough, I could not find it. I'm so excited to be able to share my favorite childhood book with them!

It is a delight to read the wonderful reviews of this book from individuals who also discovered it at a young age. I first read it in elementary school and now, at 36, I still treasure my hardbound leather edition, a steal at a neighbor's garage sale. I have recommended this book to many individuals, especially lovers of dogs, but it is a simple and touching story that will touch anyone's heart. This Christmas, I am giving my 75 year old mother what I consider my 3 favorite books of all time as a thank you for her encouraging me to read at an early age. Those three books are: (in case you wondered) Beautiful Joe, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and The World According to Garp I know that she will diligently read them all and be touched by the books that have touched me, some for 25 years and more.

My grandmother gave me the copy that her grandmother gave to her. my copy was written back in the late 1800's. She read it to me every night. When I think this book is the most wonderful book. Full of emotin from a diffrent point of veiw. Any animal lover will laugh and cry, and will just love this book.

This was my favorite book when I was a child. I am sure that it had a profound effect on who I am today and I highly recommend it to anyone who has children and/or loves animals. This is a great learning tool.

How exciting that this wonderful book is back in print! I don't think there is any other book that had such a profound influence on me as this one did. To read this in the formative years will make an animal lover out of anyone. I was proud to pass the legacy of this book down to my own three sons, who love it as much as I did! Since this was written in the late 1800's, some of the language is a bit old-fashioned and may require explanation; also, the early scenes of abuse are disturbing, especially for a younger or very sensitive child. I would probably recommend this for ages 8-12, though it certainly could be read and enjoyed by anyone. To look through the eyes of Beautiful Joe will change your perspective forever. It is a life-changing book.

This book has been my all-time favorite book ever since i was a child. This is a book with a special message and should be read to every child. It teaches right from wrong and how to respect animals and people. If you are an animal lover, it is a must read book.

I was at the age of seven, and received this book for my birthday. It was from my Grandmother, a former second grade teacher. It took me several weeks to read it. I read it a few minutes every nite till I could not wait to finish. The book is so well writen, and the story content plays with ones feelings. This book will make you feel.It will make you cry.It will make you feel warm.It will make you feel the hurt and anger of cruelty. This book will show you the importance of love, compasion, and respect for all things living within our control. To protect and preserve all things. This story should be made into motion picture for all to enjoy. I recomend it to be a childs first book. I recomend it to be a State Text reader for the early grammer years, or a High School assigned Classic, for all to read.

I thought by the title that it would be a different, but interesting view of things. Though it starts out seemingly okay, it soon loses momentum and becomes very dull. I am determined to read the book in entirety, but really is becoming a struggle.
