Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisette Baez
Drawing Made Easy Beautiful Landscapes is part of a series of seven books which will allow the reader to discover their "inner artist." The series includes thoroughly explained information on drawing animals, flowers, people, landscapes, fantasy images, and more. Although artists of all ages will enjoy this series, it is geared towards advanced artists. Beautiful Landscapes begins with a detailed introduction about the materials and tools needed, along with a detailed explanation of several pencil techniques. Some pencil techniques explained consist of hatching, scribbling, and burnishing. The book continues with in-depth information of drawing basics, texture, and perspective to create lifelike landscapes. The artist is guided with step by step directions of creating basic landscape elements along with beautiful landscapes from around the world. Begin with learning the techniques of drawing trees, foliage, skies, and clouds. The artist can later incorporate these skills by creating the Venice Canal, Sonoma Desert, or Depoe Bay—just some of the many landscapes featured in this book. The Drawing Made Easy series will be a valuable resource for any aspiring artist. Reviewer: Lisette Baez
VOYA - Steven Kral
This seven volume set uses seven specific types of projects to help readers improve their drawing ability. Besides the two volumes reviewed here, the series presents volumes concentrating on drawing life-like heads; dragons and mythical creatures; life-like animals; dogs; and flowers and botanicals. Beautiful Landscapes begins by discussing the pencil artist's tools, composition, use of light, shadow and perspective, and basic pencil techniques. The middle section leads the reader through construction of trees and other landscape elements; and the volume concludes by integrating all of these elements into eleven landscape projects. Colored Pencil also begins with a discussion of tools and techniques, but includes an examination of color theory and creating form. As with Beautiful Landscapes, the emphasis is on providing examples to allow the reader to hone the concepts in the volume. In this volume's case, it provides twenty one small projects to practice, ranging from a butterfly to a fruit still life. Each volume in the set follows the same basic pattern: materials, techniques, and projects. They are extremely well illustrated, showing the incremental stages of the project. The text is conversational and the technical terms are well defined before being used. Upper elementary school readers would have little difficulty following along. While it is a better set on the subject than some, it does assume some technical ability on the part of the reader. Reviewer: Steven Kral
