Beautiful Letdown

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Switchfoot's fourth release marks a big step up for the band: Their first project to be released on both mainstream and Christian record labels, The Beautiful Letdown could be the California-based foursome's ticket to the crossover big time. The band are clearly up to the challenge, as Letdown is easily Switchfoot's finest work yet. Expertly crafted rock songs expressing deep insight into the human condition is nothing new to these guys, but this is a huge leap forward, musically and lyrically. Perhaps it's the new addition of fourth member Jerome Fontamillas on keyboards, who brings depth to the music. Perhaps it's the cleverly worded title, a thematic thread that runs ...

Perhaps it's the cleverly worded title, a thematic thread that runs throughout this collection. Or maybe it's the effortless way Switchfoot move between hard-hitting, hammering guitar rock ("Meant to Live"), anthemic encouragement ("This Is Your Life"), and mesmerizing, moody ballads ("Beautiful Letdown"). Whatever it is, we want more of it.
All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
In 2002, alternative CCM rockers Switchfoot cribbed some wider exposure from Mandy Moore, contributing tracks to her film Walk to Remember. It was a good fit, as the film, like the Foot, strode toward the mainstream without forgetting its good-hearted ideals. They returned in February 2003 with the slick modern rock missive The Beautiful Letdown, which promptly blew up the Christian charts and garnered Switchfoot an armful of Dove Award nominations. But, issued through Columbia Records instead of Sparrow, it was clear Letdown had designs on something larger than the CCM market. Thus, a year later in 2004, Switchfoot has issued the album again. It's the same, though the mix is slightly tweaked and an unremarkable DVD with videos and some unreleased stuff appears, hoping to appease those who bought the thing once already. Musically, the album is kind of all over the place. But it's always melodic and well-paced, and carefully emulates what's already worked for adult alternative. So, while "Meant to Live" approaches the chunky grandeur of Fuel, "Gone" is a winking singsong of a thing that owes a huge -- huge -- debt to Sugar Ray. There's also stuff like "This Is Your Life" and "More Than Fine," where slick electronic treatments accentuate Jon Foreman's slightly Bono-ish vocals. It's all tinged with the spirituality that's been Switchfoot's m.o. since the beginning; however, the band's work is too easily hooky and mature not to find favor with secular audiences. The meanest thing you can say about a gorgeously layered ballad like "Dare You to Move" is that it's more of a nice, warm Tuesday evening than the wee hours of a greasy Saturday night. But there needs to be gradation like this in rock, bands on both the good and evil sides of the coin trying to hold it down. And for their part, for what they do, the members of Switchfoot are very talented. Here's hoping their polished halo brings its gleam to the mainstream.

    Definitely worth the investment

Every song on this CD has the ability to hook you onto Switchfoot for life. Good, clean entertainment. Each of these songs stands out as well as the others. Switchfoot has a distinct sound, and once you get a feel for that sound, each song lives up to the standard that the previous one sets up. That also being the reason why this listener gave 4/5 stars. Personally, I love the Switchfoot sound, it is addicting once you start listening. Potentially, a great band. The only criticism, that there is not a whole lot of difference between their CDs. Catchy, toe-tapping, and unique in that they can hold their own as a band.

best artist out there are these guys

I thought that this was a great cd because of all they do is rock and they hardley say anything about the savior (I am not saying that is bad or anything it is just that they say they are christian music people and they mostly talk about the savior). Well this is their best cd yet. The best song would be meant to live.

    musical genius

musically, lyricall, and in any other way you could possibly imagine, the beautiful letdown is anything but a letdown. crossing over from jamming guitars [adding to the noise] to lyrical piano-based ballads [on fire] can sometimes be a little sudden, but the way switchfoot meshes this album together is nothing short of genius. this album is definitely more easy to listen to than some of their previous albums, notably legend of chin [which is quite dissonant yet remarkable] and the lyrics are more thought provoking and less vague than LOC. it is their best album to date by far, and really every song is a pleasure in its own way. the problem with some of switchfoot's earlier cd's, especially LOC and a new way to be human, is simply that they were more or less experimental. it is obvious when you hear the music and try and understand the harmony. i think with beautiful letdown, switchfoot has finally given people what they want, while maintaining their creative genius. which is very hard to do.

    a mixed rock record

this album has a smooth mix of hard-rock and acoustic grooves, while doing a little tapping of punk, too. The lyrics show christian values, while not overwhelming a person who has differnet viewpoints. A very solid listen.

    A Learning Piece

What a great start to the album with a song like "Meant to Live". For a moment I thought I was listening to the class of Big Wreck - more famous for "That Song" but instead I stumbled across a band called Switchfoot. I must say I was really looking forward to hearing from a new addition to the solid rock genre however that was short lived after the 1st track. As the B&N review points out, the album is all over the place - one moment you are listening to heavy rock and the next thing you know it sounds like you have just bought the Moffats last album. Switchfoot have a bright future if they can remain consistant, but this album sadly falls short of good.

    I love Switchfoot!

I started off listening to them by downloading a few songs. Then i became obsessed. Switchfoot opened me up to new music and opened myself up as well. The lyrics take you to a realxed place and let all your fears and sadness go away. I recommend all Switchfoot songs to everyone.

    Triple P

Being a new Switchfoot fan, I bought this CD recently and loved it. It is a great CD for starting Switchfoot fans. It spurred me on to their unique sound and I am now considering buying one of their other CDs. I found their first CD disappointing, but this one great. I reccomend it to any one with a taste for this genre of music.

    An Amazing CD all around

Normally when I buy a cd, there are 2 or maybe 3 songs out of 10 or 12 that I can really get into. That is not the case with this cd. Every single song on this cd is great. From hard rock, to punk and slow acoustic songs. they are a great christian band without shoving it down your throut. My friends all love this cd and I would recommend this to EVERYONE
