Overview

Amelia Warner will stop at nothing to get what she wants: everything.

Seventeen-year-old Amelia Warner is always on the outside. Moving from boarding school to boarding school with her brother and their father, the untenured professor, doesn't help. Amelia lives inches from the sons and daughters of the elite, forever looking in on the beautiful people. A natural-born charmer who doesn't lie so much as rework the truth to her advantage, Amelia is well-versed in the art of faking a high-society identity to get limited access to the luxe life, but she's never figured out how to truly belong. Then she meets Courtney Moore, the Upper East Side heiress who needs a friend as badly as Amelia wants to be that friend, and suddenly a world of opportunity opens up for her. Parties, shopping, her own wing in the Moore mansion—it's all hers for the taking, as long as she can keep her real life a secret, especially from the new acquaintance who's been asking way too many questions. Can Amelia stay one step ahead of the doubters to secure her place in the beautiful world?

This was a very different look at the privileged life that the Upper East Side lives in, and Amelia(Ann) is determined to make it her rightful place. Reality is that Ann is the daughter of a untenured professor who is struggling with various positions to make ends meet. Her brother Zach has his stunning good looks to keep the girls guessing if he was a younger version of Johnny Depp. But deep down Amelia is a con, a walking fraud who wants the best and brightest, but isn't going to pay for any of it. This book to me shows the lengths some people will go to break into the good life, and just how twisted the steps really are. Amelia latches onto the naive, but gorgeous Courtney Moore and gets her to buy Amelia everything from a Cartier tank watch, to drinks at The Carlyle. But how long can Amelia keep the con going before everyone knows that she is really poor plain Ann? Amelia is very bright, and very convincing, but I wonder just how long the house of cards can really stay going. Seems this book is going to be taking us along for the ride, and this first volume has all the name dropping you expect, and you get to see the glittering island of St. Barth, to the Upper East Side, and everything in between.
