Overview

In this reversal of the Sleeping Beauty story, gorgeous Galiana Montehue—resisting her family's efforts at arranged marriage—scorns all her suitors and finds true love only after she awakens an injured knight from a deep sleep. As the novel begins, Galiana has come to view her beauty as a curse, and she fears for her future. Wishing for an adventure, just one, before she is forced to settle down and marry, she takes a stroll in winter's first snowfall with her younger twin brothers and, following them into the forest, is horrified by the sight of a knight drawing a sword on one of the boys. Without thought, she throws a rock and hits the knight on the back of the head, knocking him unconscious. Taken prisoner by the knight's men, Galiana finds herself locked up in a strange manor house where she is forced to care for the incredibly handsome victim of her well-aimed throw, but when the young man finally wakes from his coma, the household’s happiness turns to sorrow upon hearing he is now blind. By this time, Galiana has become very fond of her knight, and he in turn is fascinated by her gentleness and her wit. Because he is unable to see Galiana's beauty, she trusts him, and by the time his eyesight returns, the young knight is ready to ask for her hand in marriage. He also reveals his true identity—as a spy for Prince William. As he describes his life-and-death mission to find an ancient, magical stone known as the Breath of Merlin, Galiana knows her wish for meaning and adventure has come true, and she joins her prince in his fight against the forces of treachery and ancient magic.

    more from this reviewer

Traci E. Hall provides an exhilarating late twelfth century tale

In 1193 her family demands Galiana Montehue marry soon or else they will arrange a marriage for her. So far she has found no one appealing as her incredible beauty has become a curse that has hardened her to all these shallow charmers. Galiana takes a walk with her twelve year old twin brothers when they engage in a snowball fight in the near forest.

Abruptly a man with a sword threatens her siblings. Galiana throws a rock at him, hitting his head and knocking him out. The knight's men grab her to take care of their injured leader. When he awakens from his comatose state he is blind. As she nurses him back to health including his sight, they fall in love, but the royal spy Wallis O'Rourke must find the Breath of Merlin artifact to save the land from an evil ancient magic and marry the woman he loves before her father cuts off his head and other body parts.

With hints of Camelot, this is a terrific medieval romance as King William's espionage agent falls in love with his beautiful nurse while he is unable to see her "curse". The story line is fast-paced from the moment Galiana cast the first stone and never slows down until the final confrontation with her raging dad wanting his blood for her abduction. The twins put in-law relationships in perspective when they call him "her rapist". Traci E. Hall provides an exhilarating late twelfth century tale as the Montehue brood wants vengeance against the man who loves their daughter.

    I Also Recommend:

    Love this series!

After reading "Love's Magic" by Traci, I heard from her husband, who is on my Facebook, that she had a follow-up to it. And since I fell in love with the characters in LM, I jumped at the chance to read another book about the Montehue family. As with LM, BC has awesome character development and an original storyline...I love the period about which Traci writes, and appreciate the research that she must have put into it. After reading BC I find that there is yet another, about the youngest Montehue girl to follow, so that'll be my next B&N purchase! Good job Traci!

    Book 2: WONDERFUL

After reading the first book in this series, Love's Magic, for free; I loved it so much I went ahead and purchased the other two books in this series! I must say book two, Beauty's Curse, was even better! So much mystery and plotting, I swear I didn't want to put it down! The characters mesh so well together and I love how Roarke falls in love with Gali while he is blind. Didn't matter to him what she looked like....so sweet! I will be moving on to the third installment in this series and see what mysteries are waiting for me in this next book! Thumbs up for Mizz Hall!
