Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
It's been more than five years since Tanya Donelly released a full-length album -- a period that saw the former Belly leader experience the joy of motherhood and the sadness of losing a dear friend to disease. Both emotional extremes are captured in this somewhat subdued but ultimately cathartic set, on which Donelly segues easily from twentysomething angst to a more mature vision of the world. On the slinky "I'm Keeping You," she asserts herself strongly in the realm of romantic love, while "Mama" finds her in a more pensive mode, waxing winsome on her new role in life. As ever, Donelly is prone to dark sonic outbursts -- captured stunningly on "Moonbeam Monkey," ...

As ever, Donelly is prone to dark sonic outbursts -- captured stunningly on "Moonbeam Monkey," which features the guest vocals of Morphine's late frontman Mark Sandman -- and universal-sounding takes on interpersonal relations, such as the openhearted "The Night You Saved My Life." Consider Beautysleep to be proof that maturity need not equal boredom.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
The aptly named Beautysleep finds Tanya Donelly's creative muse refreshed and revitalized after the four-and-a-half-year stint between this and her solo debut, Lovesongs for Underdogs. However, this album bears little resemblance to Underdogs' slick, slight attempt at triple-A pop. Indeed, its best moments, such as "Another Moment," share the same sweetly spooky vibe that Donelly perfected with Belly, but also belie a stronger, more grounded sound and lyrical outlook. "In the beginning my love was fierce
ow I sit with my babe at my breast/I was never this good at my best," she sings on "The Night You Saved My Life," and this domestic serenity seeps into most of Beautysleep's material. Songs like "The Storm," "Keeping You," and "The Wave" hew closer to traditional singer/songwriter conventions than Donelly's earlier work -- and feature a slightly countrified twang to boot -- but still retain enough of her trademark weirdness to make the album distinctive. Beautysleep's quirky, slightly trippy production adds another layer of interest, particularly on "Life is but a Dream" and "Moonbeam Monkey," which, despite its title, is an eerie, hypnotic duet with Morphine's late singer, Mark Sandman, and one of the highlights of Donelly's entire career. Similarly, moody tracks like "Wrap-Around Skirt" and "The Shadow" wouldn't sound out of place on a Belly album. While Beautysleep doesn't offer quite as many of the giddy peaks and valleys that made Star so enthralling, it's arguably Donelly's strongest and most consistent work since that landmark album.

    Beautysleep is Wake-Up Call

    Beautysleep is remarkable in its variety - it swings from moody Twin-Peaks-like dreaminess in ''Life is but a Dream'' to the playful musings of ''Moonbeam Monkey'' to the straight-ahead smart pop of ''The Night You Saved My Life'' and ''The Storm''. If you the Tanya Donelly of Belly and Throwing Muses days, give Beautysleep a listen.

    Life is but a dream . . .

    'Beautysleep' comes almost 5 years since Tanya's last record, 'Lovesongs for Underdogs', and it's well worth the wait. She's quietened down, but for the better, as this set of dreamy tracks work superbly to highlight her beautiful and unique voice. 'The Storm' and 'The Night You Saved My Life' show her well-renowned pop instinct shining through.

    Bewitching and Hypnotic

    I've been a Tanya Donelly fan for a long time, but nothing could have prepared me for the way this album moves me. Her singing on this album is impeccable, and her songwriting skills have never been stronger. Although she's proven to us time and again that she can rock hard, she seems more suited to the intimacy of an acoustic guitar and sharing her lovely voice with the listener.

    Hauntingly Beautiful

    This album, although very different and less pop in sound than her last solo effort, is a beautiful album brimming with emotion. They lyrics are stuck in my head and haunt me constantly. Several of the songs seem to focus on her daughter and are so touching.

    Good artist, Good music

    Tanya Donelly has been an important part of music, fronting influential bands, and setting up the scene. And now she's back with her new disc ''Beauty Sleep.'' With a track list of soul embracing songs, she reminds the listener to why they enjoy music with depth and meaning. Beauty Sleep is a rare gem, and among its facets are sparkles like ''Keeping You,'' ''Life is But a Dream,'' and ''Another Moment.'' If you're ready to take a chance on winner, place your bets on Tanya Donelly.

    Beautysleep = Beautiful

    With her first release in nearly 5 years, Tanya has once again out done herself with this beautiful collection of songs. Each song flows so nicely into the next. It has a concept album feel to it. She has strayed from her days of pop with this one. The best way to describe it is mellow and dreamy. I highly recommend it. BUY THIS ALBUM, this is her best work yet!

    Everyone could use some ''Beautysleep''

    This album was well worth the wait. It's been 5 years since her last release! There are 11 tracks in total on Tanya's latest album, ''beautysleep.'' Among them, my favorites are ''Life Is But A Dream,'' ''The Night You Saved My Life,'' ''Moonbeam Monkey,'' and ''Wrap-Around Skirt.'' If you're a fan of Tanya's other works, you won't be disappointed. If you're not already a fan, then this may help you to become one.
