Author Biography: When David Rice was seven years old, he observed a small dog trying to wake its mother which had been killed by a passing car. As he watched the grieving puppy's vain attempts, he was struck by the depth of sadness and pain. David's lifelong interest in feelings - both animal and human - comes through in his books, Do Animals Have Feelings Too?, Lifetimes and Because Brian Hugged His Mother. Lifetimes introduces some of nature's longest, shortest and most unusual lifetimes and the lessons we can learn from them. Because Brian Hugged His Mother shows how a chain reaction of kindness can spread through a whole school and community as a result of a single hug. David Rice is retired elementary and special education teacher, currently residing in southern California.

When Brian hugs and kisses his mother one morning, the act starts a chain reaction of kindness and consideration that spreads throughout the town and eventually comes back to him.

Editorial Reviews

Independent Publisher Magazine
Dawn Publications specializes in feel-good books for young people. This one starts with a poem: "Be kind in all you say and do / With just one kindness a chain will start / To grow and glow from heart to heart.!" . . . For any boy or girl of the age of Brian (perhaps six who "woke up feeling great!", this is a charming story with lovely illustrations and a sweet message. . . The lesson is delightfully pressed home, and repetition may endear the story to readers, enlarging the children’s vocabulary and opening their eyes to the wonder of their every-day life.
NAPRA ReView
What happens to a hug after you give it? Brian doesn’t even think about it when he hugs his mom in the morning and tells her "You’re the best mom in the whole world!" But his simple act starts a chain of reactions that brings happiness and satisfaction to a vast circle of people he will never even know about. Rice’s loving and gentle lesson in the art of random acts of kindness has just the right tone to appeal to younger children, enhanced by the brightly hued, watercolor-soft artwork.

Children's Literature
Those two adages "A little bit goes a long way" and "Kindness is contagious" are truisms in this book. A simple act of kindness may go further than you think; certainly further than Brian realizes. It all starts out one morning when Brian wakes up and gives his mother a hug. Brian's hug acts like an object in motion. As the events unfold throughout the day, many unselfish acts are performed by people and even animals. One kind deed leads to another. Rice expresses his belief that kindness can bring happiness and make one's day a bit brighter.
Kirkus Reviews
For those who believe that books for children should teach a lesson, have a moral, be sweetened (even falsely), be relentlessly upbeat and inclusive, this is the book for them. Accompanied by realistic, brightly hued watercolors of home, school, and street, the story opens when Brian, feeling great, begins his day by giving his mother a big hug and kiss. "Brian's mother felt loved and appreciated" and because she feels that way, she makes Brian and his sister, Joanna, their favorite breakfast of waffles, peanut butter, and whipped cream. Joanna, feeling loved and cherished, tells her teacher how he makes learning fun; he feels competent and successful and has the children make a banner for the principal's birthday. Several more incidents join the feel-good chain, involving a bus driver, baker, mechanic, dentist, police officer, chef, and finally back to Brian. The story is repetitive and graceless as it tramples the worthy message of kindness; the author's intentions are not at fault, only their execution. (Picture book. 4-8)

I've been hunting for this book

This is a story I just picked up and read on the display in the library. I forgot the title but I loved it. I've been searching for it ever since. It's a wonderful book showing how we can help others have a better day from the little things we do.

    Kindness is contagious!

As an retired educator, I love positive books that easily demonstrate how contagious kindness is. This is a precious message and book for children.
