Because I Can

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Aaron Latham
The rebellious nature of a precocious 16-year-old is apparent on the cover and in the title of Katy Rose's debut disc, as she pulls at her hair with fingers clenched and emits a disconcerting scowl that makes her declaration of Because I Can feel all too real. It seems Rose has done some living in her short life, and she is more than ready to use her musical gifts as a cathartic outlet. Approaching her music with the swagger of a young Liz Phair, Rose delivers a set of pop
ockers that are lyrically convincing, musically sound, and a step above most anything by Avril Lavigne, someone she will inevitably be compared to in age and attitude. ...

But unlike Lavigne, Rose embraces who and where she is in life -- there is no pretense. She is a teenager who has a lot on her mind, with a life that seems to be passing by at lightning speed. "I Like" demonstrates this point, as the simplistic opening line of "I wanna live before I die" has her contemplating the pitfalls and possible rewards of commitment, all the while singing a chorus of "la la las" that celebrate her teen spirit. Although her lyrics are never too deep and even include some sophomoric expletives, she rarely crosses over into high-school notebook confessionals. And while she is grousing about life, love, and relationships, it is interesting to note that her writing partner and producer is her own father, Kim Bullard a noted keyboardist and member of Poco. Working through her lyrical angst with her father may have been a smart move, as it seems to have stabilized both her and the project. However, for all that they have done right, it is unfortunate that the production style is so hooked into the angry teen girl sound of the moment that it makes an interesting song like the single "Overdrive" sound banal. Carrying the tunes is Rose's voice, which is not necessarily unique either, but she is a capable vocalist and can sound pretty on ballads like "Snowflakes" or intense, as on the rockin' "Vacation." Throughout Because I Can, Rose writes and sings like a young rebellious teen, which is just fine because that is who she is. She doesn't hide it, apologize for it, or try to come off as anything more. Hopefully, she will always stay true to herself, and as Katy Rose matures and grows, her music will continue to blossom as well.
Blender - Mim Udovitch
Like her Top 40 contemporaries, she's as catchy as can be, if not a little catchier. But unlike them, she's indisputably the real deal.

    Looking Forward To More

This girl is pretty clever and a great writer for a 16 year old. The lyrics aren't predictable which is such a good thing- a relief and a breath of fresh air from most other music acts. I am very much looking forward to hearing more from her.

    a young Liz Phair

This album is amazing. Some people are probably going to be very quick to compare her to Avril Lavigne since they are around the same age and sound alittle bit alike but if you listen to the lyrics they are very different. Avril goes for the more played out rock music while Katy mixes her anger and confusion with metaphors and similies. She reminded me of a young Liz Phair. Katy doesn't hold back or or make any apologies and that just makes her even more real.

    No Words Are Enough

No words are good enough to describe this album. Her voice is amazing, her lyrics are true to who she is and writes exactly what she thinks (which is good), the music is great, everything is a thumbs up. I've actually had this cd for a while but i still listen to it. I personally think she blows Avril Lavigne away, and I like Avril. I can't wait for Katy's next album. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be another!!!)

Read this, I put a lot of time into it!!!

This cd might be the best I have ever heard. It is one of my very most favorite cds, maybe my absoulte favorite, and coming from me that is saying a lot because i have high standards. Katy, you are such an inspiration. You make me so happy, when I listen to your music I appreciate people in this world like yourself. You're songs touch my heart, they're so real and I relate to every one. You're music is POWERFUL, it makes me so happy to listen to it. I want to reach out to others, just like you've reached out to me. Guys go buy this cd!!! I've had it for about 8 days only and I'm totally loving it! It is not you're usual junk that you hear eveyone singing on MTV, it's deep without being cheesy. The lyrics are so real, they're like listening to my self think or something. That might sound weird, but I'm telling you every single one of these songs kick a55 and you can tell Katy is really passionate about what she does. And she's so young! I think she wrote this stuff when she was 16 which blows me away. If this cd does to you what it does to me and has the same effect on you (and I guarentee you'll have to listen to it to fully understand what I mean,) then you will know why Katy does what she does. And you will thank her. Thank you Katy! It makes you believe in yourself. At least it did for me. It's hard to explain, but when you listen to her songs I think "Wow, I want to make people happy like this too!" And I probably sound like the corniest drama queen ever right now but I don't care. So spread the word, Katy Rose is the best! Here's the list: 1. Overdrive- Awesome, upbeat, very "feel-good" & it makes you want to get up and dance 2. I Like- Pure bliss. Cool rock stuff, it's a great track. 3. Watchin' the Rain- This one is different, but that doesn't mean it's bad. In fact, it rocks! 4. Enchanted- Cool lyrics, the song makes you think. 5. Catch My Fall- AHHHHHHHHH! The song opens with a scream, which is really cool when you listen to it. Another winning track! 6. Snowflakes- I love it! Pretty song. Her voice rocks. 7. Glow- Sweet lyrics, awesome song. 8. Teachin' Myself to Dream- The title is pretty self-explanatory. But for those of you who still don't get it, it means that this song is positively rockin' and has a good meaning: you can do it! 9. Vacation- Katy, you've done it again! This is my song. She so brilliantly sings "Who are you to know my story, who are you to read my book? I don't think you know how crazy people say I am. You're running in the deep end Katy, why don't you give a damn?" It is like what someone would say to me; my name's Katie too, lol. 10. Original Skin- Wow! This one's sweet. It's different; accoustic. It's got this like beachy kinda vibe to it, very orignal and it sounds great. 11. Lemon- My favorite song on this album. It's made me cry. It moves and touches you. I agree with Lindsay, who also wrote a review. It's beautiful! 12. Because I Can- You can Katy, and you did! Lol. I love this one too. They lyrics are the best. There you have it guys. If you still don't have this cd, go buy it right now. I hope now the average reivew is 5 stars (it was 4.5) thanks to me! Katy- Love ya girl! Keep on rockin'!

    Real music!

If you don't like "Lemon" off of Katy's album, you don't know what she has been through, and if you don't like any song off her album, you're really deaf! This is the most real album I've ever heard! Katy and I have expiriences that we regret, and I totally relate to "Lemon" because it is my anthem when I'm depressed! Katy is number 1!!

    AWESOME CD!!!!!

I never really listened to rock but Katy Rose's CD not only has excellent music, but her lyrics are terrific! They are very meaningful and a lot of effort went into making this CD. I highly reccomend it, even for those who don't like rock music.

    Great Album

This album is great. Katy Rose is a cross between Avril Lavigne and Joss Stone. She's punky but still sings somewhat popular music.

Surpasses The OverPlayed Avrils of Before her

Although Katy keeps getting compared to other singer/songwriters such as Avril or Michelle Branch. Katy is different, and it is evident in her music, no cheesy songs like "Sk8tr Boi". Katy's music is soul-felt and real. Something the music industry is currently lacking.

    She's not Avril . . .

This is a really good album. She gets compared to Avril a lot-- her voice sounds a little like Avril, but it's definitely better. Her lyrics aren't just put scraped together in a rush and they've got meaning, though some parts take a bit of thinking to really understand. This is an awesome album.
