Overview

“I don’t care about your conscience. All I want is for you to kiss me again.”

Lady Madeline Matthews would rather shame herself than sacrifice her freedom. To avoid marrying an aging, lecherous lord, she seeks out the company of Logan Scott, for a torrid affair with the notorious womanizer would surely condemn her in the eyes of good society.

In truth, Logan is an intensely private man tormented by past betrayals. Now a forward little minx, completely at sea in London’s sophisticated whirl, is disrupting his life with her vibrant charm and unspoiled beauty. But when what begins with a kiss threatens to blossom into something more rapturous and real, will Logan and Madeline have the courage to drop the masks they hide behind in the name of love?

Madeline's gaze fell on the picture. The longer she stared at it, the more fascinated she became. The man's face could have belonged to a king, a sea captain, or an outlaw...someone powerful...someone dangerous. He was not classically handsome -- his features were too bold. There was a lionesque quality about his lean face, his gaze narrow and piercing, his wide mouth set with the hint of an ironic smile. The color of his hair was indeterminately brown in the print, but it appeared to be thick and slightly rumpled.

The other girls waited for her to blush and giggle as they had been doing, but Madeline kept all sign of emotion from showing. "Who is he?" she asked Eleanor calmly.

"Logan Scott."

"The actor?"

"Yes, the one who owns the Capital Theatre."

A strange feeling came over Madeline as she continued to stare at him. She had heard about Logan Scott, but she had never seen his likeness before now. At the age of thirty, Scott was an actor of international fame, surpassing the standards set by David Garrick and Edmund Kean. Some even said he had not yet reached the height of his powers. Among his attributes was a voice that was reputed to stroke the ears like velvet or set fire to the air with its crackling intensity.

It was said that women pursued him everywhere, enthralled not only by his skillful stage performances as the romantic hero, but even more by his portrayals of archvillains. He excelled as Iago or Barabbas...he was the consummate seducer, betrayer, and manipulator, and women adored him for it.

A man in his prime, attractive, cultured...everything Lord Clifton was not. Madeline was wrenched with sudden longing. Logan Scott inhabited a world she would never be part of. She would never meet him or anyone like him...she would never flirt and laugh and dance, never be seduced by a man's tender words or a lover's touch.

As she stared at Logan Scott's face, a wild, mad idea came to her -- one that made her fingers tremble.

"Madeline, what's the matter?" Eleanor asked in concern, taking the print from her. "You're so white all of a sudden, and you look very strange -- "

"I'm just tired," Madeline said, forcing a smile to her face. She wanted to be alone; she needed time to think. "The weekend was a strain. Perhaps if I rest for a while --"

"Yes, of course. Come, girls -- we'll meet in someone else's room." Considerately Eleanor herded the crowd out the door and paused before closing it. "Madeline, is there anything you need?"

"No, thank you."

"I'm certain that seeing Lord Clifton this weekend was an ordeal. I wish I could help in some way."

"You already have, Eleanor." Madeline lay on her side, drawing her knees up to her chest, the skirts of her simple school frock bunched around her. Her mind raced with thoughts, and she scarcely noticed her friend's quiet departure. Logan Scott...a man whose appetite for women was nearly as legendary as his acting talent. The longer Madeline considered her own dilemma, the more convinced she became that Scott could provide the solution. She would use him to make herself so undesirable to Lord Clifton that he would have no choice but to call off the engagement. She would have an affair with Logan Scott.

    to anonymous "so, sweet...

please refrain from writing a book's synopsis or summary and giving away what happens in the book. it really kills the expectancy of reading something that you were looking forward to its like when you go to the movies, you're waiting to get your ticket and the person in front of you blurts out whats gonna happen.

So Beautiful, So Sweet......Such a Disappointment

Madeline Matthews, in an attempt to escape an arranged marriage to a wrinkled, old, and all around gross nobleman, runs away from school and into the heart of London, fully intending to ruin herself. She obtains a job at the Capital Theater and meets Logan Scott and he becomes the target of her misguided seduction. Logan suffered extreme physical abuse as a child and is now a hardened man and believes himself impervious to all emotion, especially that of love.....until Madeline. Madeline is shocked that not only is she physically attracted to Logan, but also that she believes herself to be fully in love with him. Logan fights his own attraction to Madeline tooth and nail. But eventually he succumbs to his emotions and accepts her love, and is willing to provide love for her. But Madeline's family tracks her to Logan Scott's home and her duplicity is revealed. Logan believes that Madeline has betrayed him and used love for her as a tool for her own advantage. He shuns her completely. The first two hundred pages of this book were SOOOOO GOOD! I was turning pages like a crazy person. Logan was dark and repressed, and so unnervingly sexy. Kleypas does a remarkable job of displaying his slow realization of his love for Madeline. This book COULD have been perfect. I was utterly enraged when Kleypas decided to bring an unwanted pregnancy into the picture. I can't stand it when authors do this. It FORCES the characters back together rather than actually allowing them to work it out for themselves. Not to mention that Kleypas turned Logan into a complete tool. He treats Madeline with such utter disrespect and coldness that I felt was undeserved. It is true that she betrayed him but that does not excuse Logan from becoming a misogynist. Not cool. Lisa Kleypas is a wonderful writer and I adored the first two hundred pages of this book. But I could not stomach Logan being so oppressive towards the end, or Madeline being so submissive.

    Not her best

I am big fan of Lisa kleypas. I have many books of her, but this one was a little disappointment. It was almost the same thing in the beginning until the end. I thought this book lacking passion and heat between the characters.

    You must read this!!!

Man, what a good book! As much as my heart hurt for both Madeline and Logan, I was just as elated for them in the end. For those who read the book: Do you remember when he cried? AWWW! :). Just the right balance of ... oh, just read the book.

    Exciting Love Story

The male lead is hooked fairly quickly by the charming female protagonist. Her effervescent innocence and resolute independence is brilliantly balanced by his somber ambition and relentless need for control. His loss of control and descent into love is dramatic and realistic, they face many difficulties and he is unforgiving. But true to most of Kleypas books, the heroine succeeds in turning this glowering dragon into a loving husband. One of my favorites from Kleypas.

    Because You're Mine...

This book was a great read. There is something about LOgan Scott that captivates you. He is tough and aloof, but there is more to him. It takes Madeline "Maddy" Matthews to unearth it.

In an attempt to escape a terrible arranged marriage, Maddy seeks a job at Logan's theatre company, in the hopes of seducing him as a way to escape her marriage. The book is full of twists and turns. I won't give much away, but it is really intriguing. My only disappointment was the ending. The very last chapter felt rushed.

    I Also Recommend:

    Very romantic!

Wow I never thought i'd be one to pick up a romance novel and enjoy it so much! I've always vowed to myself never to read romance, but after hearing about this book from a friend, i decided, why not give it a shot? Oh and I am so happy I gave it a chance because I enjoyed this book so much! There wasnt a moment where I wanted to place it down. The characters are all very realistic and relatable. The plot is simple, nothing too exciting, but nothing boring either.

I found something kind of interesting...there isn't a villain or antagonist. Sure there's the main character and minor characters, but never a person you could label as the "bad guy". The villain here I guess would be an emotion, pride.

    Definitely read this book!!!

    I Also Recommend:

Because you're mine by Lisa Kleypas

She is my favorite romance author but this is so far my least favorite of her books. It is not that her writing is wrong or boring because when you pick up her books you are never going to find that. But the plot was a little much for me and also I was in conflict because there were too many options. Let me explain- I thought that there should be one strong male lead and of course the arch enemy or something of the sort. The man that is placed in that role is a passive enemy at that and really has no threat to his character. So the purpose he is supposed to serve fails. Also it cleans up a little too nicely. We come to expect happy endings but not somed up so neatly. But this is only my opinion. I would never say don't read this because she is a great author and this might capture someone else's heart although it did not capture mine.

    Captured the emotion!

My boyfriend bought me this book and I never read a historical romance other than the Peer and innocent girls trying to catch a husband etc. But this book set on the theater back ground, eventhough i love phantom of the opera so much but i never really like this kinda book. I thought it's gonna be dull, but apparently it was very refreshing. And the way Lisa Kleypas put the emotions of the characters through words really touched me and it felt so real.

    Will Dazzle the Mind

This book, though wonderfully written, was not Kleypas' best. She has amazing skill and the book shows that. Her rapid progression in this well written novel is not quite to my liking. I like her style and the events, for the most part, but I feel it was lacking in some areas I was not suspecting. I do feel that it is a magnificent piece of literature and do suggest that one would read it, despite it's minial flaws. Not her best, but definitely better than most.

    A Must Read

Because You're Mine is a fantastic book. Logan is an amazing character who fights his desire for Madeline only to discover that she is his one true love. One may want to read Somewhere I'll Find You which introduces Logan although it is not as good as Because you're mine. Read this fantastic book and enjoy!
