Overview

Everything nineteen-year-old Karina Mitchell knows about death changes the instant that she and her best friend, Rainey, are shot. For one, souls don't die. They cross over. Only, Rainey's soul hasn't, and her ghost is hell bent on haunting Karina.

When Karina begins her sophomore year of college and moves into the apartment that she was supposed to share with Rainey, she learns a few shocking truths from her mysterious and gorgeous blue-eyed neighbor, Eli.

One: Karina has been chosen to become a Beckoner-an immortal conduit of the dead who helps safely guide souls to the other side.

Two: She's the reason that Rainey's soul can't cross over-Rainey followed her back from death and missed her window to be at peace.

Three: Eli is hot. As in swoon-worthy, to-die-for, will-make-you-forget-yourself hot. And it turns out, Eli is a Beckoner, too.

Despite her attraction to Eli, the decision to become a Beckoner isn't an easy one-it would mean giving up her own mortality ... her own soul. But if she doesn't, her best friend will be left to suffer an eternity at the hands of the evil Ceptors, dark creatures that feed on the souls left behind. After all, it's her fault Rainey is haunting her.

Time is running out, and Karina needs to decide: Are love and loyalty worth sacrificing her soul?

Meet the Author

Cindy has dreamed of being an author since third grade when she won a writing contest for a story she wrote about her deceased great aunt. She hasn't been able to ignore that dream since and chooses to spend most of her free time listening to the voices in her head and writing their stories.

Outside of her writing and working for Spencer Hill Press, Cindy is happily married and has three young boys. She lives in PA, but was born and raised in NC. Even though she's lived in the northern half of the US for ten years, she still very much misses grits for breakfast and every now and then goes on a country music binge.

Her debut novel, BECKON ME, will release on April 13, 2015. It's a dark but sweet NA paranormal romance for both NA and upper YA readers.

I'm so glad that Jennifer Armentrout introduced the first book by Cindy Thomas to me on Facebook!!!  It was a great read, and I can't wait to read more from Cindy and to see where she takes Karina and Eli. This book had a totally different twist on the usual 'paranormal' romance story.  The action was fast-paced, and the story kept my attention by unraveling the pasts of both the major characters slowly, but surely. Read this book!!!

Wow, what a surprisingly fun, sweet read! Cindy Thomas adds her own unique twist on ghosts and what happens to your soul after you die ... and what happens when you get close to dying, but don't. I enjoyed every second of it. To give a bit of info on the plot, Thomas jumps right into it. Within the first few pages, we see how Karina almost dies, and how her best friend, Rainey, does. Fast forward a bit, and Karina is back at school, trying to move on with her life. There's only one problem: Rainey's ghost is hanging around, and she's begging Karina to help her. But this can't be real, right? Ghosts don't exist ... or do they? The pace of Beckon Me is perfect. It never drags, it never feels rushed, it's just the natural progression of Karina's life. She's making new friends, meeting up with old ones, and not to mention her hot neighbor, Eli. But even though Karina is trying to get past that terrible night and continue living her life, Rainey's ghost seems to be getting worse. Karina soon learns that she has to make a choice: stay human but be haunted by ghosts for the rest of her life, or become a Beckoner and help ghosts move on, including saving Rainey's soul. The only problem is, if Karina does decide to become a Beckoner, she loses her mortality, and risks her soul in the process. I really like the idea of Beckoners and their counterpart, the Ceptors. It's a unique twist on a familiar idea, and you can tell that Thomas really took care in her world-building. Not only is there the eternal battle between Beckoner and Ceptor, there's also the bit of mythology and beliefs added in for the Beckoners themselves. There is more to this world than we're shown, but we're hinted at it, and that just intrigues me even more. Okay, I just have to say, I really love Karina's character. She feels so real to me. Her thoughts and actions reflect those of a 19 year old girl, and I really connected with her. She has her doubts and fears, but she's strong, and even though she's scared, she's going to fight. Even when things seem like they can't get any worse, Karina doesn't give up. I love a character like her. She's inspiring. Now, for Eli. I was a bit back and forth on him for awhile, but that's because I never quite trusted him. Well, that's not exactly true. I trust Eli's character, but sometimes I feel he doesn't act in the best interest of Karina (like withholding very important information from her). However, by the end, he won me over. The chemistry between him and Karina is on-point, though. It's intense, and there are definite sparks. I never felt like they we're being forced together. Karina is looking out for herself first, and I like that even though she has feelings for Eli, she doesn't let her whole world revolve around him. I also must say, I wish Gabby could be my best friend. Her and Karina's friendship never feels forced, either, and there's no negative feelings between them. They are both genuine characters that only want the best for each other, and that is an enviable friendship to have. Gabby's a very important character to the story, but I like that, among the serious talks, she adds some relief and lightness to Karina's life. I am so very excited to read the next book in this duology, especially after reading the ending. Action packed with lots of important facts being revealed, I cannot wait to see how Karina is going to face this new change in her life.
