I loved this book! Good story, action ROMANCE! Tessa is a great heroine, smart, sassy, and holds her own even when she's in over her head. The werewolves, especially Dastien the love interest, are SEXY! And, there's a lot of humor. The author has created a fun world to hang out in. Can't wait for the sequel!

It's lively, fast pace and full of variety. I had a great time!

Visions, telepathy, spells, werewolves, vampires, fighting scenes and a beautiful love story ... Wow! I really enjoyed myself!

A perfect novel to promote on Halloween day, since the author uses many supernatural elements to populate her narrative. And even if there are werewolves and vampires, it has nothing to do with "Twilight". Maybe a little with the atmosphere of Alyxandra Harvey in her academy for Hunters in "The Drake Chronicles."

The plot is well done. It won me over from the start and push me to turn the pages because I wanted to know how Tessa going to get bitten and become a wolf. This is perhaps the most frustrating part because the bite comes to worst moments ... When the reader begins to melt for the hero!

I liked the main and secondary characters. They are funny, touching in their overreaction are fun and sweet.
    Imogen is an exceptional pest.
The male are always in competition to mark their territories and Tessa is a young woman as I like them. A festy, hot tempered heroin who will let no one step on her toes and who dare defend her ideas, beliefs.

As for the plot, it is original in the way the author presents and enliven it by varying the romantic aspect, the fighting scenes and twists.

Frankly, it's been awhile since I had so much fun. The characters are worth the read, the plot makes you want to turn the pages. It's lively, fast pace and full of variety.
     I had a great time!

    BOOK SYNOPSIS

Tessa McCaide has a unique talent for getting into trouble. Then again, it isn’t easy for a girl with visions to ignore what she sees. Luckily Tessa and her family are leaving California and moving halfway across the country, giving her the perfect opportunity to leave her reputation as “Freaky Tessa” behind.

But Tessa doesn’t realize that kissing the wrong guy in her new Texas town could land her in far more trouble than she ever imagined. Like being forced to attend St. Ailbe’s Academy, a secret boarding school for werewolves.

Even if the wrong guy did accidentally turn her into one of “them” and doom her to attending the weirdest high school ever, Tessa can’t help her growing attraction to the mysterious Dastien Laurent.

When vampires attack St. Alibe’s and her visions pinpoint an enemy in their midst, Tessa realizes that boy drama and her newfound canine tendencies might just be the least of her problems.

    My Thoughts

When we think of werewolves we usually think of a human who has been bitten who turns into a ravenous bloodthirsty flesh eating beast when they change for the first time. While this is true in many series this time the author has chosen to mix things up by showcasing “born Weres” as well as “turned Weres” who just so happen to live outside the Texas town that Tessa and her family move to from California.

Tessa McCaide has lived her whole life feeling like she has to be apart from others thanks to her “visions”, after all it is hard to hug someone or even shake their hand if you know that you will be privy to that persons memories and of course kissing is totally off the table so now as a teenager her social life has really hit rock bottom.

The night before leaving for their new home an hour outside Austin, where her older brother Axel will be going to college, Tessa’s parents throw a party for former clients of her Dad as well as neighbors and friends. Having found Tessa alone in her room her brother cons her into coming downstairs just to make a quick appearance and scope out a young male actor that she has a secret crush on. Doing so against her better judgement ends up proving to Tessa once more that mingling in a crowd was not the wisest choice much to her dismay.

Once the trip is over and the McCaide family make it to their new home they are met by Michael Dawson the head of St. Ailbe’s Academy and Tessa’s fathers new boss. Along with Mr. Dawson is a former student who has graduated, Dastien Laurent, who is strikingly good looking and immediately intriguing to Tessa although she does not wish to explain to anyone why.

As a werewolf fan from way back this was a very nice beginning to what I hope continues to be a strong character driven series, the way that the plot unfolds was enjoyable as well as just different enough to stand out in the genre and the fact this is geared toward younger readers makes it exceptionally fun when we are introduced to the rest of the attendees of St. Ailbe’s Academy.

While the relationship between Tessa and Dastien followed the tried and true formula of many paranormal romances it still had its own unique presentation and for me it was awesome to watch unfold as was the way in which the author allowed Tessa to come to grips with her change in circumstances.

The vampires were creepy and not at all the seductive creatures that they are usually portrayed as, rather they are more true to form as the villain who has come to the Academy in one aim which is to eradicate the Werewolves.

This is an easy read, well paced with lots of internal angst as well as dialogue between the characters that allows the reader to follow for themselves exactly what is going on at any given moment without giving away what will happen next.

As an author that is new to me Aileen Erin has penned a very satisfactory urban fantasy whose world and characters will be very happy to revisit in book 2 Avoiding Alpha!

Loved this book! Got hooked on the first one, and ended up preordering both 2 and 3. It was a really good read, fun and quick (hard not to be when you just get sucked in). I even reread this one before the 2nd came out... and may or may not be planning on doing same before the 3rd.
I was a little weary since a lot of books like this are high school age (Im not.... Think young at heart but my license says otherwise) but it was actually a lot better than I expected. The main characters just hook you, and the connection between Tessa and Dastien …. Well, yea. I have reread the book a couple times and plan on it again.
The world the author created is a lot of fun to hang out in!

    Fun, Romantic, Action-Filled

No worries about neglecting any supernatural creatures in this young adult paranormal romance series—BECOMING ALPHA takes on a little of everything as it revolves around a witch who becomes a werewolf and fights vampires.

Normal isn’t really in Tessa’s vocabulary.  She’s been ridiculed for her differences and never been part of a group. She’s grown up with the ability to see people’s thoughts just by touching something they touched which makes it hard to fit in.  As a result, she tends to keep to herself, with only her parents and brother as friends.  Just before Tessa’s senior year, her father moves the family to Texas and takes a job working with a special school, St. Ailbe’s Academy.  Tessa is warned not to converse with any of the St. Ailbe students, but doesn’t think that applies to the hot young teacher, Dastien, she’s met a few times since moving to town.  Tessa isn’t especially surprised when she doesn’t fit in at her new school either, but she makes an effort and even attends a class party.  When she runs into Dastien outside the party, they share a kiss that quickly turns painful when Dastien bites and scratches her.

One bite turns her entire world upside down.  Ridden with pain and fever, her family calls the headmaster at St. Ailbe and quickly find out that the bite is making her transition into a werewolf.  To protect herself and her family, Tessa has to become a student at St. Ailbe and is thrown into a world she didn’t know existed.

I vacillated between rating BECOMING ALPHA 3 or 4 stars throughout the story and finally decided to end in the middle at 3.5 stars.  Tessa herself annoyed me.  Though she didn’t know it, she had been destined to become leader of the witch coven until the werewolf bite changed everything.  As a werewolf, she is instantly one of the strongest and shows a lot of alpha tendencies.  She seems able to ignore most alpha commands and break alpha synchrony with little effort.  All these things set her up to be a kickass heroine.  But her inner dialogue was so whiney and wallowing in self-pity that I didn’t really believe she had it in her.  When the werewolf pack has to fight vampires, Tessa takes a leadership role and it seemed to come out of nowhere.  She hadn’t even read the werewolf manual to know what to do; she’d certainly never investigated her witch powers, so why did she suddenly know how to take control and lead?  Maybe it was just innately in her as alpha and heir apparent of the witches, but I questioned it.

I also thought the action scenes with the vampires and the werewolves plotting against St. Ailbe could have been a little more complicated and fleshed out and a little less predictable but I still enjoyed it as part of Tessa’s journey.

The plus side was Dastien.  He was alpha to the core.  His growling, raging, and dominating attitude was everything I’d want in a werewolf mate and I was drooling at his every jealous action.  His inner wolf was determined to claim Tessa as mate and until she accepted it, he was going to make sure no other werewolves at St. Ailbe’s came anywhere near his property.  I also really liked Tessa’s new werewolf friends Meredith and Chris.  They were fun and gave depth and dimension to Tessa’s journey at her new school.

BECOMING ALPHA is a fun, romantic, action-filled young adult paranormal novel and fit those criteria perfectly.  BECOMING ALPHA is book 1 of a trilogy about Tessa’s journey and it promises to be an entertaining one with Dastien by her side.

    A party, a boy, a kiss...

Tessa's life sucked. Sure, her father's job brought famous heartthrob actors through their door, she had great parents, an adored brother, the great house...and, oh yeah, the visions. Turns out that wearing gloves all the time to protect yourself from the touch and the resultant revelation of others' thoughts didn't win you any fashion-forward awards. All it got you was the label of freak. So when Tessa's father accepts a job at a school in Texas, Tessa doesn't have any emotional ties to severe in L. A. But she does have an unusual vision of a super hot guy, but this time something's different - because he sees her, too.

When super hot guy turns up as a graduate and instructor at the private school which now employs her father, she wonders why everyone warns her away from its students...why SH Guy starts turning up everywhere she goes...and why, the first time she accepts a party invitation from a new classmate, a kiss turns into a horrifying and life altering event.

I just happened across this as an inexpensive NOOK Daily Find and bought it because of the werewolf thing, but ended up really enjoying it. And I only have to wait until May for book 2, Avoiding Alpha!

This was an amazing book. I was completely hooked from page 1 - I loved this book! For me this was one of those books where I couldn't read fast enough to see what happens next.

    Characters: 5/5
Aileen creates well developed and lovable characters. I connected easily with all of the characters and grew attached to all them quickly.

Tessa - I loved that Tessa doesn't fight her crush for Dastien at first. She is awesome and different. I adored her sibling bond with Axel and loved her friendship with Meredith. Tessa was easy to connect with. I cannot wait to find out more about her witch side and see how her relationship with Dastien will grow in the rest of the series. Tessa is definitely my favourite character in this book.

Axel - Axel is Tessa's awesome older brother. He is caring, naughty, and looks after Tessa exactly like an older brother should. He is one of my favourite characters.

Dastien - Dastien mysterious at first and completely swoon-worthy. He is witty, smart and possibly the most awesome boyfriend to have in this book. Dastien can be a bit dense at times when it comes to Tessa - In a way its sweet that he cares so much and keeps messing up and on the other hand you just want to shake some sense into him. I absolutely adore Dastien!!

Meredith - Meredith is such a great friend. She is easy to connect with (From Tessa and reader POV), understanding and accepting. After all Tessa has been through, she is so lucky to have a found a great friend like Meredith.

Shannon and Imogene - Imogene is such a weird name. Both of these characters annoyed me a lot.

    Writing style, plot, pace: 5/5
Aileen has a writing style that draws you in immediately. I quickly became addicted to this book. The pacing is perfect and the plot was interesting. Becoming Alpha definitely drew me in hook, line and sinker. Aileen does some great world building which is simple and easy to navigate.

Cover: 4/5 - I actually really liked this cover. The more I look at it, the more I love it and after reading the story, you can see how perfect it is.

    Great Read

Loved this book. Couldn't put it down. Only thing that bugged me was the romance, a little. It was great, not gonna take away stars or anything. And I've read PLENTY of werewolf books, so I know how the I'm-obsessed-with-my-mate thing goes. It just annoyed me how much she swooned over the guy in her head (and sometimes outloud) when he was pretty much a worthless jerk for a while. Whatever, though. In the fashion of this author, the love interest you're not really sold on becomes incredibly loveable by the 1/2 mark. Awesome read, overall. I think I'd recommend to 13 and up.
