Although a historical, the story involves conflicts and situations not uncommon in modern days. Lucinda Bishop learns to cope with the death of her parents, start a new life in unfamiliar surroundings, and learn about love and forgiveness. When the young hero becomes a Christian, he realizes he must face his past and whatever consequences may result, even if it means he will lose the one girl he loves.

 

Set in Oklahoma Territory before the days of statehood, the story is one of how love and forgiveness can overcome even the most difficult obstacles when God is in control. When one’s heart is attuned to God’s leading, the greatest of sins can be forgiven and a new life begun.

The first installment in the Winds Across the Prairie series by Rogers (Not on the Menu) is a serviceable, conventional novel. The plot promises entertainment: orphaned Lucinda Bishop moves from Boston to the Oklahoma Territory to live with her Aunt Amelia and Uncle Ben, and finds true love after Jake Starnes recognizes his need for Jesus Christ and faces his past. The writing, however, plods along in a rut of short, dry sentences: “He blinked and shook his head. He had to quit daydreaming and face reality. Lucinda Bishop would never marry him. He'd never marry anyone.” Plot twists occur, but with little fanfare or drama: Lucinda may be being stalked, Aunt Clara appears at the door and a tornado destroys the ranch house. Some readers will balk at the relegation of women to the kitchen (where they all love kitchen work) and the obvious Christian jargon throughout—“God loves you now and always will. He loved you enough to have His Son die for you”—but others will enjoy this traditional tale. (Jan.)

Meet the Author

Martha Rogers is a former schoolteacher and English instructor with considerable experience writing both fiction and non-fiction. She served as a newsletter editor for the writer’s organization, Inspirational Writers Alive! for six years and is the state president.  She is also the director for the annual Texas Christian Writer’s Conference and is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers. Her novel, Not on the Menu (May 2007), is a part of Sugar and Grits, a novella collection with DiAnn Mills, Janice Thompson, and Kathleen Y’Barbo. Rogers has a Master’s Degree in Education, worked for twenty-eight years as a secondary teacher, and has worked as a supervisory teacher at University of Houston Clear Lake and as an instructor of English Composition at Houston Community College. Martha and her husband live in Houston, Texas and have worked with teenagers at First Baptist Church for twenty-four years.

    Highly recommended

    This book is a really sweet wild west romance book. It is well written with and very captivating. I enjoyed the story and could hardly put the book down!

    Love this series,

    Boston 1896, Lucinda Bishop was a seventeen year old young woman and had just lost her parents in a buggy accident. She was down to inherited a large estate when she turned eighteen, but her uncle Rudolph Bishop was very angry that he did not receive more of his brother's estate.


    Her uncle Ben and aunt Amelia from the Oklahoma territory invited Lucinda to go home with them as she had no one else to live with. She would get to meet her cousins and have someone to love her. So this is what she did and had to learn a completely new way of life. She had grown up with servants and cooks, so all she knew how to do was play the piano and embroidery. She soon learned some of the skills of keeping a home. She met Jake Starnes that worked for her uncle Ben and she was very attracted to him, but he had a secret of his own.



    Some things started to happen to Lucinda that could not be understood as she was being shot at and no one knew who it was and why. Then Jake received God into his heart and had to go back to Texas to confess to some things in his past. What will happen to Luncinda latter called Lucy and Jake?


    I though this was a very interesting book as I have read the others in the series but not this first one, so now I know how it all begin and I will go back and read them all together. Martha Rogers is a very good author and comes up with some great ideas.

    Prairie romance

    Easy reading. If you enjoyed Jeanette Oke's prairie romances, you'll love BECOMING LUCY, book one of her Winds Across the Prairie series.

    A young Boston heiress finds herself alone after her parents' deaths, except for her father's brother who wants her dead so he can claim his brother's wealth, and her mother's sister who offers to take her in. The only problem is she must leave the city she loves and move to a humble ranch in remote Oklahoma.

    Once settled in with her aunt's family and surrounded by love, Lucinda Bishop grows in confidence and faith, but danger follows her. She is in danger of losing her life to an unknown assailant, and losing her heart to the quiet ranch hand with a secret past.

    This is a heartwarming story of Christian love worked out through everyday situations, even hard ones. It will bless the whole family.

    The first Winds Across the Prairie tale is an interesting western inspirational romance

    In 1896 Boston, following the tragedy that took her parents, Lucinda Bishop buries her beloved mama and papa on the same day. Her maternal Aunt "Mellie" Amelia and Uncle Ben Haynes offer her a home on their Oklahoma Territory ranch though the seventeen years old heiress would prefer to remain in Boston. Her paternal Uncle Randolph is outraged when the kindhearted attorney Mr. Sutton explains he inherited only 10K as the bulk of the estate went to his niece in trust until she turns eighteen. Lucinda remains behind to close the estate before heading west.

    Ranch hand Jake Starnes expects a little orphaned girl based on his employer Mellie's description. Instead when he meets her in Barton Creek to take her to the ranch, he sees a Boston beauty. He vows not to want her as he believes he is unworthy of her love as an incident in his past hangs over him though he feels a kinship to her having lost his parents when he was fifteen. As they fall in love, while someone stalks Lucinda, he realizes he must confront his demon now knowing that God and Lucinda are in his heart.

    The first Winds Across the Prairie tale is an interesting western inspirational romance starring a wonderful lead female who comes west as Lucinda but quickly becomes Lucy the rancher and a hero who finds love when he finds Jesus. The support cast consists of warm friendly welcoming Sooners and a couple of nasty Easterners. Although the tale is not for everyone as the Christian messages are heavily stated, fans will enjoy Lucinda's story of moving on from grief to happiness and love with the Lord to guide her.
