School Library Journal
Gr 35—PR for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, these books praise its efforts to save endangered animals. Becker crams so much into Frenemies that the story of raising two Anatolian shepherd dogs with two cheetahs almost gets lost. The presentation is dry and tedious, especially when the author enumerates the many laudable attempts to save the cheetah. There is a quick summary of the cat's well-known characteristics as well as an interesting look at other personality traits, which the author links to the animal's prehistory, history, and current, untenable situation. A smooth, yet boring progression leads to a similar discussion of Anatolian shepherd dogs, their training, and their introduction to the cheetahs. The author even throws in information on the role zoo accreditation plays in improving conservation results. Stanek presents a well-written description of the milestones in an Asian baby elephant's life. Unfortunately, a few of the illustrations showing the handlers and veterinarians wielding instruments need more than a general explanation for the uninitiated. Others are right on target, and still others appear to have been placed simply to make the page more attractive. The author keeps up a well-paced narrative that will give young readers insight into how the zoo's handlers teach the baby to be obedient so that they can keep him healthy and strong in this special environment. Library collections need Stanek's work because there is little that brings to life the intimate struggle of zoos and conservation efforts at an easy reading level.—Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA
