Overview

Bedazzler lives up to its title as one of the more exciting out-of-nowhere major-label in some time. Opener "Hairdown" sets the pace, a chewy, economical number that pits the Cars in an OK Corral shootout with outlaw roots-rock and alternative chart sounds. Vocalist Jason Taylor strings his vocals out desperately over "Joanne" before the song resolves in a shouted "hey!" chorus plus "woo-woo" backing vocals -- insurgent country dealing to an addicted Counting Crows by way of the Rolling Stones. There's a naked wiredness to Taylor's delivery that sometimes recalls the Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano, but with a more accessible tunefulness.
