    A terrific tale with plenty of humor

    Guardian angel Chance Godricson returns to earth (with a heavenly shove from his BFF Angus) out of concern for one of his clients, agoraphobic sufferer Queisha Saint-Denis whose life he saved eight years ago when he died in a mall collapse. The mortal faces difficult challenges as the Fitzgerald couple disappeared on a mountain climbing trip. Queisha is the legal guardian of their five years old twins Lace and Skye because they trust her to care for them as she had been their surrogate mother birthing them.

    Works Like Magick employment agency owner Viveca assigns Chance to serve as the cook for Queisha and the children. He also serves as guardian to the frightened twins. Queisha struggles to provide the twins with what they need. Chance has problems too as he sheds his feathers whenever his thoughts stray to Queisha, adheres to the awkward angelic honesty tenet regardless, and hardest of all tries to remain detached.

    The second Works Like Magick urban romantic fantasy (see Naked Dragon) is a terrific tale with plenty of humor especially as Chance struggles with unacceptable thoughts and dreams, and the heavenly dictate of complete honesty. The twins enhance the story line though perhaps they are too precocious while Angus is more an impish messenger than a guardian angel.     Works Like Magick #2

    Guardian Angel Fourth Class Chance Godricson had been human eight years ago. That is when Chance died. But before the underground mall collapsed, Chance rescued one terrified lady, Queisha Saint-Denis. Queisha became Chance's first assignment as a guardian angel. Angus, a Scottish angel, is Chance's friend and fellow prankster. Angus reveals to Chance that the archangels have come to notice that Chance is spending so much time watching over Queisha that his other assignments are being neglected. Then Angus shoves Chances out of Everlasting and onto Earth. ............................

    Vivica "Viv" Quinlan is the owner of Works Like Magick, Salem's premier employment agency. Her clients are not human. Thus, Viv steps in to help Chance. It has become Chance's new duty, per the archangel triumvirate, to help Queisha through the upcoming ordeal that will test her limits. ................................

    Queisha has no idea who the man was that had saved her life eight years ago. Suffering from agoraphobia, Queisha is unable to leave her huge mansion home, except to stand on a small, yellow brick patio. Six years ago, Queisha had been a surrogate for the Fitzgerald couple and had given them twin daughters. Queisha has missed the twins every day since. Viv brings Queisha news that the Fitzgeralds have had an accident while mountain climbing. They named Queisha to be the legal guardian of Lace and Skye. Chance is to be co-guardian of the girls, never expecting to reveal who or what he is, an angel, complete with a Technicolor dream coat (a.k.a. wings), which he keeps tucked in pouches on his back that resemble regular muscles. However, Chance quickly learns that being back on Earth also means a resurgence of his physical needs, such as eating, sleeping, and desire. Every time he even things about his desire for Queisha, he sheds feathers. Can Chance help Queisha with her agoraphobia? Can he keep his secret of being an angel and the one who saved her years ago? Can he help Queisha draw the twins out of their shells? And how can he help when the Fitzgeralds' relatives, greedy for the little girls' inheritance, challenge for legal guardianship? ..........................

    ***** FIVE STARS! The story's focus is on angels, instead of dragons, this time around. Though the angel theme is fantastic, I personally prefer the dragons. No worries, the characters from Naked Dragon make brief appearances in this story. In fact, a couple of characters from a whole different trilogy even have cameos! As for Angus, the archangels punish him by turning him in to a bright red bearded cherub. Yes, you read that correctly. Angus is the messenger between Chance and the archangels. The character of Viv seems more tense and less approachable than in the first title to me. She did not loosen up until well in the story. But I am happy to say that author Annette Blair has succeeded, once again, in creating larger-than-life events and characters, somehow making them believable, and then adding her own special magic to bring it all to life. Utterly charming. *****
