Children's LiteratureOn this particular evening, Melanie, a little girl, is busy negotiating with her mother for one more minute before bedtime. She is preoccupied with her building blocks, needing just a few more long moments to complete her architectural masterpiece. In the meantime, her Mom substitutes Melanie with their willing dog Bart, who receives the girl's regular bedtime routine. The Mom obviously has a good sense of humor and a healthy dose of patience as Melanie's determination to finish her tower makes her blind to Bart's compliant "replacement" of her. Delightful illustrations reminiscent of the 1950s fill the pages of this lighthearted book bringing artful irony to the timelessness of this plot. Of course, Melanie's antics are inspired by a true, and universal, story. Children in denial of bedtime and the parents trying to enforce it will enjoy this realistic situation turned into a fun read. 2005, Philomel Books/Penguin, Ages 3 to 6.
