Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This slight volume breaks down bedtime preparation into its components, from putting away toys and brushing teeth to turning on the nightlight. Warnick (illustrator of Ride the Wind: Airborne Journeys of Animals and Plants) presents less a story than an itemized list: "Bring your teddy bear/ and your special blanket/ and your favorite book." Each soft, straightforward watercolor presents a portrait of a single object--toilet paper roll, sink, pillow--against a plain white background. The final picture introduces a child, sleeping, and gathers several of the aforementioned items. This paper-over-board book succeeds in evoking the comfort of nighttime rituals and the familiar, solid presence of its necessary props. But although toddlers will recognize this catalogue of objects, some may wish for a story line. Ages 1-3. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
PreS-Familiar bedtime rituals of putting away toys, using the potty chair, bathing and brushing teeth, and finally snuggling into bed with a teddy bear and a favorite book are neatly chronicled in this simple picture book. The pages are clean and uncluttered, with large, clear watercolor illustrations that show each item mentioned in the text-a toy box, a bathtub, a pair of slippers. A child appears in the last painting tucked neatly into bed. Soft shades of blue, green, and brown are set off by plenty of white space. A gentle good-night treat.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY
Kirkus Reviews
A low-key bedtime book for toddlers has a gossamer plot and a simple presentation of familiar objects. "It's nighttime. Here are your toys. Now it's time to put them away and close the curtains." Among the most complex illustrations is a toy box with toys scattered on the floor; among the starkest paintings are close-ups of a potty chair and toilet paper on a roll. The objects are always recognizable, even the lovingly rendered fixturesþan antique sink and a claw-foot tub. The book winds up with "Your pillow waits for you and the night-light is on. It's bedtime. Good night." With its whispered text and precise renderings, this is a gentle addition to the bedtime-book shelf, sure to lead children off to sleep. (Picture book. 1-3)
