Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda Ledbetter
After a busy day of playing, Button, a young brown bear cub, needs to go to bed. He remembers the fun of the day, but when his memories return to the big scary tree-bear, Button worries that he'll have frightful dreams. To help calm down Button, Daddy tells him about a very happy day when there was nothing scary—the day that Button was born. Daddy recounts his own memories of Button's first day while an excited Button repeatedly interjects questions until the whole family has peacefully drifted to sleep. Amber Stewart's sweet story is made more adorable by Layn Marrow's illustrations of the bear family and their adventures. This short book makes for a great bedtime story for young children as they prepare for their own sweet dreams to come. Reviewer: Amanda Ledbetter
School Library Journal

PreS-K

It's bedtime in the forest, and little Button the bear has just been tucked in. As he reviews the events of his day, the vivid memory of a "scary tree-bear" frightens him so much that he is afraid he will have bad dreams. When his parents respond to his cries, they share pleasant memories with him to keep the bad ones away. Their reassuring story about the day Button was born is told in a natural, conversational style. He eagerly interrupts with questions and comments, creating a loving echo of how human parents share stories with their own children. The soft colors and brushstrokes of Marlow's illustrations underscore the sweet, gentle nature of the tale. The bears have round bodies and button eyes, which bring to mind the teddy bears that children might cuddle as they listen. A good choice for bedtime stories or for evening storytimes.-Mary Landrum, Lexington Public Library, KY

Kirkus Reviews
As Button gets ready for sleep, he remembers the scary tree-bear he saw that day; to allay his fears, Daddy Bear tells Button about "a day when there were no scary things . . . .The day you were born . . . ." Marlow provides a sequence of comforting spreads that juxtapose Button and Daddy Bear at bedtime against Daddy's warm memories of Button's birth day-which was a day much like this one, Button realizes, and gradually Daddy's and Button's memories mingle till nothing but sweet dreams are left. This woodland interlude invites inevitable comparison with such well-known powerhouses as Guess How Much I Love You? and Can't You Sleep, Little Bear? Stacked against them, this hasn't much new to offer in tone, and it's downright pallid as an anxiety-buster when compared to Bedtime for Frances. Skip it. (Picture book. 3-5)

    A must read.

This book was absolutely wonderful.....a delightful bedtime story for a new baby or a young child that has fears at night. It would also make a wonderful story for a big sister or brother that just welcomed a new sibling into the world and feels left out.
The author did a wonderful job. The only thing I disagree with is that it is just recommended for Pre-K and the reading ability is easily up to Gr. 2
