CHAPTER 1

A Little Lamb's Prayer

A Prayer about the Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.

PSALM 23:1

stnuggle time

Shepherds know all about sheep. They know sheep are helpless and weak. They know sheep can't see very well and like to wander. That's why sheep need a shepherd to keep them safe.

Little lamb, do not fear. The Lord, your Shepherd, is near!

bedtime Bible thought

David was a shepherd. As David watched over his sheep, he learned something. People are a lot like little lambs. Sometimes they are afraid. Sometimes they get lost. That's why David wrote, "The Lord is my shepherd." David knew that God would watch over him, just like a shepherd watches over a little lamb! God will watch over you, too!

my hug-a-bye prayer

Dear Father, I am Your little lamb! Watch over me tonight and keep me safe. I will not be afraid, because You are near. Thank You for being my Good Shepherd!

nighty night!

Give the one who prays to the lord, our Good shepherd, a great big hug!

Praise for Days

A Prayer to Thank the Lord

I will praise the LORD as long as I live.

PSALM 146:2

Today and all my days, I will give God all my praise!

stnuggle time

It's nice when someone sees your good work and thanks you for it. That's what praise is: seeing someone's good work and saying "thank you!" Praise is a good way to show love.

bedtime Bible thought

David looked up into the night sky. He saw the moon and all the shining stars God made. David praised God for who He was and for all He had done. God is happy when we praise Him for His good work!

my hug-a-bye prayer

Dear Father, tonight before I go to sleep, I want to praise You. Thank You for who You are and for all You have done. You are an awesome God, and I PRAISE You!

nighty night!

hug time

Give the one who praises the lord in prayer a great big hug!

This is a sweet book that ties in a biblical concept with a little prayer relating to that concept. Each reading is short and sweet! My kids (3 & 5) like the "hug time" at the end. I had hoped that it would give more open-ended questions for helping kids pray their own prayers, but these prayers are sweet, too! I LOVED this author's other books but thought this one was just okay.

I loved this little prayer devotional and so did my son! It was simply perfect for him at the age of 2 with colorful pictures and wonderful rhyming phrases such as "Nothing too big, nothing too small, just pray to God about it all!" It was so cool to see my son get excited about prayer time! When he was ready to go to bed he would bring this book over to me so we could read our nightly chapter! I think his favorite part was the hug time since he seemed most enthuastic about that! However he really enjoyed looking at the pictures as well and pointing out different things such as birds or kittens! However, not only did my son truly benefit from this book, but I did too! They little sayings and prayers stuck with me as I read through the book! The snuggle time thoughts were a good opening to the bedtime Bible thoughts and the variety of things that we prayed about was fanastic! It goes from all the way to praying for our pets, to self-control, and probably my favorite one: prayer about saying "I love you, Lord!" The only downfall about the book is that I really wish there was a ribbon to mark the page! It would have been helpful since my little toddler likes to take out any bookmarks in the book! Beside that, this book is a must have for young kids! I definitely plan to reread this one again in the future because it has great messages/prayers that a child can understand and hold his attention (granted I know my son didn't get everything being so young, but he will soon enough)! I highly recommend it for kids 3-5! I give Bedtime Prayers That End with a Hug! a 5 out of 5 stars!

Beautifully Illustrated! This book of bedtime prayers was written for young children from the ages of three to five years old. It was designed to be used as loving lessons in preparing the child for the routine of bedtime prayer. Explanations are given to explain what prayer is and who the child is praying to, as well as a description regarding the importance of communication with God. Composed of 52 different bedtime prayers featuring a different topic, prayer preparations are arranged in steps. The first step is an easy to understand Bible verse. Following that is "snuggle time" which equates to a brief story pertinent to the Bible verse, a "bedtime Bible thought," and "my hug-a-bye prayer." This is followed by "Nighty Night! and the time to give the child a loving hug, communicating parental love and the love of God.  The illustrations included in Bedtime Prayer That End With A Hug are beautifully done, colorful, age appropriate, and diverse. They are cheerful and whimsical, adding a sense of fun and happiness to a child's training in bedtime prayer. These illustrations are impressive and add an atmosphere of joy to the world of prayer. The bedtime prayers relate to numerous topics, such as being thankful, loving others, making good choices, being joyful, friendship, etc. Other topics that are featured include, fear of the dark, fear of thunderstorms, worrying, etc. Some of these concepts could be skipped over if a child doesn't exhibit those particular fears. My personal feeling in this regard is that introducing these concepts could instill fears in a child that otherwise don't exist. "Going to the Doctor" is one example of the possibility of instilling fear where there may be none. The verse for that particular prayer entry is Isaiah 41:10, "Don't be afraid, for I am with you." If the child exhibits a fear of doctors this is a helpful and loving way to give comfort, but with a child who is comfortable with his/her doctor this could instill fear where none exists.  It is important that the parent or caregiver use discretion with each individual child regarding what is appropriate for that given child and his or her age. Overall, I found this to be a very useful method of introducing bedtime prayer to young children. A few of the terms used are not age appropriate, but simplifying those terms would help to explain the message.  Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Tyndale Kids in exchange for my honest review. Are you looking for a good way to introduce your little one to a nightly prayer routine? Bedtime Prayers That End With A Hug! is a wonderful resource to achieve that goal. It is filled with 52 nightly prayers that address a different topic each night. The language is simple so your preschooler will easily understand the topic that is being taught. The illustrations by Ruth Zeglin are beautiful and calming, just the thing for a wind down at the end of the day. Each day's prayer is broken down into segments titled Snuggle Time, Bedtime Bible Thought, My Hug-a-Bye Prayer and then it ends with a nighty night hug time! You are instructed to "give the one who seeks the Lord a great big hug!" I'm looking forward to sharing this with my little ones each night! What a beautiful habit to get your little ones into.
