Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
This collection of classic stories has been rewritten to share out loud. Many of the stories are familiar and a few may be new to some readers. For example, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "The Musicians of Bremen," or "Little Red Riding Hood" are included alongside "The Ape and the Crab," "Crow Brings Daylight," and "The Dung Beetle." Each one of the twenty-one stories is only a few short pages—a nice length for a bedtime story. Along with the length, the lack of violence also helps make this a nice story book to read to youngsters who are preparing for bed. For example, in "The Three Little Pigs" the first two pigs are not eaten by the Big Bad Wolf after their houses are blown down; nor is The Big Bad Wolf eaten when he slips and falls down the chimney at the Third Little Pig's house made of bricks. Instead the wolf's tail "caught on fire, and he ran howling from the house. He knew when he was beaten and vowed never to trouble the pigs again." There are black and white illustrations on almost every page. Some of the illustrations are small images such as a cup or a beetle. Others take up more room and become part of an illustrated boarder surrounding the story. Although none of these illustrations will keep young readers pawing at the pages, they will help to spark interest and enhance the idea of imagination with the age-old tradition of bedtime stories.
