Overview

Fans who know Jason Falkner best for his ironic songwriting and jagged-edge productions may be surprised to hear Bedtime With the Beatles. This lullaby album, subtitled "Instrumental Versions of Classic Beatles Songs," is exactly what it says it is: a collection of the quietest, most calming versions of Beatles classics most listeners have ever heard. There's no irony at work here, no wink of the eye, just Falkner performing -- at a painstakingly slow pace -- a set of Lennon/McCartney evergreens, obviously focused away from the early days of Fab Four frenzy and toward the post-1965 balladry of Rubber Soul, Revolver, The Beatles, and Let It Be. The instrumentation is either solo guitar or layers of keyboards, usually including solo piano, plus the gauzy tones of synths, a complete string section, or an appropriately childlike electric piano. Though relying on a minimalist aesthetic must have posed a large challenge for Falkner (he's made no secret of his fondness for the wall-of-sound approach), he displays a clear talent for simplistic performance. He highlights the melodies, but also brings into sharp focus the many and varied harmonies of these Beatles songs. "I'm Only Sleeping" is the most natural choice here, though "The Long and Winding Road," "Across the Universe," and the opener "Blackbird" are all beautiful songs given lovely performances. It's difficult to escape the impression that without Falkner's name attached to the project, his fans would loathe this album, but Bedtime with the Beatles is a surprising success.

This is my favorite gift to give expectant mothers. The songs are classic Beatles -instrumental. Very relaxing and fun.

When purchasing instrumentals of my favorite band, I find that more often than not, I become dissapointed in the arangements. "BEDTIME" is supurb. The music is soft to relax to but with the emotion that you expect from someone who has studied the Beatles that can make you feel it too.. This is a fabulous CD to end your day with.

Unobtrusive, calming, and completely familiar music. It's a beautifully done album, and is possibly the best purchase we've made for our baby (at least in the infant stages) because it's really soothing AND we don't get tired of listening to it. We were in the hospital for 3 days and had this CD playing about 50% of the time. One of the nurses asked if how we'd picked it out because it was such a great newborn's album; I had to tell her it was just ''dumb luck.'' Don't make the same mistake - if you have a baby and you are a Beatles fan (at all) you'll really like this album. On top of that, there are two verions (same music though) - the BLUE album and the PINK album...we got blue for a friend and pink for ourselves.

Since I am probably the biggest fan of Jason Falkner( at least in Norway ), I feel that rewieving this album is a must. There is seldom that you can play a record from a to z, or in my case; a to å. There are always some tracks that you feel never should have been there in the first place. That is a good reason alone to buy this album: these tracks do not exist here. Second of all, Jason Falkner cannot seem to do anything wrong when it comes to music. He has done two brilliant albums and has got much less attention then he deserves. There is really no need to go into each and every song on this album, because everything is flawless. And since I have no children I can play it sa loud as I want, and it rocks! Blackbird is probably the finest cover ever done. It almost shines through sometimes that Mr. Falkner was touring with AIR some years ago. Please your soul and buy " Bedtime With the Beatles " !!

I received this as a gift when my son was born and have been using it every night for the past 2.5 years as part of my son's bedtime routine. The songs are soothing, and the recording level stays the same, so you aren't jolted from song to song. It's nice to have this in our son's cd collection. Um, while I agree that you should have the option to choose the color of the cd case, I think it was inappropriate for the reviewer to give the cd a low rating because of case color. That is a BN customer service issue, not an indicator of the quality of the cd. That is misleading to readers of the review.

Do not order this if you want a say in what color your CD cover is (pink or blue). On the webpage when you order, the CD is pink. In the mail I got BLUE! Nice baby gift for my niece! I called customer service and they will pay my return-postage for the error. But what a pain! So I'm typing this review to warn others: ONLY buy this CD in person so you can choose the color!!
