Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A hearteningly hilarious pop-up featuring Valentine's Day cards by a host of critters! In seven peppy spreads that leap to life with artwork by Daniel Moreton, this ideal holiday gift has animals sending Valentine's wishes to their favorite sweeties. The first page, with an envelope addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. Flea and Family, 1 Furball Drive, Dogtown, USA," has a "Fleas be my valentine!" card -- opening the flap reveals a zippy pop-up from Rex telling his favorite fleas, "No bones about it -- you're top dog!" Other silly Valentine's Day pop-ups include a card from Lucy Leapfrog to Mr. Hoppity at 11 Lilypad Pond, a greeting from Pinky Elephant to Mr. B.I.G. Elephant, and a honey-filled message from Baby Bear to Mama and Papa Bear that says, "Honey, you make my heart buzz!" These animals have lots of love to give, and the biggest Valentine's Day recipient of all is the reader -- "My Sweetheart" -- with a final pop-up featuring all the animals smiling brightly! Both clever and eye-catching, this pop-up of valentines is sure to be a hit at home.
Publishers Weekly
A hearty bunch of additional Valentine's Day picture books, pop-up books and other tales of love are out this winter. The cheery 3-D Bee Mine: A Pop-up Book of Valentines by Olive Ewe, illus. by Daniel Moreton, capitalizes on the often-punny nature of valentines, and features animals that spring from the pages to deliver the punch lines (e.g., "Wool you be mine?/ I love ewe") plus campy, heart-toned artwork. Children's Literature
Seven pop-up valentines fill the pages and tickle the funny bone. Kindergarteners and first graders will giggle at the addresses, such as "Ms. Eva Ewe/ c/o Mary Had a Little Lamb/ 555 Baa-Baa Black Street/ Fleeceville, USA." The pop-ups have interesting detail, such as the moving elephant ears and the three bears' nodding heads. Lots of reds, and pinks are used throughout the book. Postage stamps on the envelopes tie-in with the addressee. The final valentine, addressed to "My Sweetheart," opens to all the critters from each of the previous six letters. A lively, colorful and fun book to share with that special someone on Valentine's Day. It may even inspire young artists to create their own pop-ups. 2004, Little Simon/Simon & Schuster, Ages 5 to 8.
