Fans of the Mary Russell series (like me!) will enjoy this short story of Holmes and Russell's first meeting told from Holmes' point of view, plus a small adventure of which Russell was not aware. The additional material is also fun, but not crucial. If you haven't read the series, don't start here, start with the delightful "Beekeeper's Apprentice."

This is a nice intro to the series. The only issue is the writer jumps from first person to third person andfor some this may be confusing.

I like how Ms. King gave a plausible and enjoyable backstory to the events that opened her first novel. It also gives new dimension to Mr. Holmes character, although his alternative thoughts at the beginning of the story seemed a bit disturbing & out of character.

Rarely do short stories satisfy as much as this one does. I attribute that to King truly knowing her charactors as well as her skill as a writer.

This short story...(not novella)...was interesting. The first page or two was particularly engaging to see the Mary Russell events from Holmes perspective. However, the work is undoubtedly an excersice for the author to better flesh out the Holmes Russell relationship. I suspect that she may have written parts of this during her first drafts of beekeepers apprentice. There are several sections where others complain of story being crammed that suggests abandoned story line of prior edits. Furthermore it appears that though King can evoke a genuine Holmes voice she does not feel comfortable doing so. Or that she feels she cannot sustained it over a long period, thus the intrusion of differing perspectives from other characters like Watson and Russell in what is a very short piece.
King is talented and it is a pity that she choses not to tell Holmes side of the story in the Russell series. This short excersice demonstrates considerable talent...and yet, her hesitancy to embrace this version of Sherlock Holmes deflates the enjoyment of the excersice. Obviously I am not a Holmesian purist, but I dearly love Sherlock Holmes stories and I would welcome a true novel of the Russell Holmes exploited from the man himself.

As with all Ms.King's offerings, a very well written tale. Having read all the Mary Russell books, I was intrigued to read about her meeting with Holmes from HIS perspective. Thank you, Mary and Ms. King, for saving Sherlock from himself!

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. In this short story, King takes the reader back to the moment when Mary Russell met Sherlock Holmes. However, this time, we see the story unfold from Holmes' point of view. It's an enjoyable variation, but not as engaging as when it's told from Russell's POV. I highly recommend the Russell/Holmes novels, for their originality and for their faithfulness to the Holmes canon. It's intriguing to see Holmes in his older years, and through the eyes of a woman!

Enjoyed it. It was a surprise which is what was so enjoyable. Enjoy reading Laurie R King's writing. I have to say, it was a bit shorter than I thought it would be, otherwise would recommend it.
