Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisette Baez
Ever wish you had a survival guide as you spent the entire summer anticipating the first day of high school? Do you wish you knew what to really expect, or how to behave? Do you wonder "Will I survive?" and wish you knew the answer? Well, your wish has been granted. Get some great social, academic and practical advice for surviving high school in the pages of this book. Four teens from San Francisco, California share their real-life stories. They bring humorous tips, funny freshman horror stories and suggestions for surviving the cafeteria as you get acquainted with your new social kingdom. Learn how to deal with failure, be cool with your teachers, and meet new people. Although the guide has some great advice and tips, you may want to use your own judgment when reading the sections entitled "Learn How to Fake It" and "Take Sick and (Not-So-Sick) Days." Telling white lies to your teachers or parents may not be the best advice. Overall, the guide will at least provide insight and firsthand experience advice. Reviewer: Lisette Baez
VOYA - Mary Ann Harlan
Freshman year of high school is both exciting and scary. This guide recognizes both the anticipation and concerns of incoming freshman. Written by four teens, two boys and two girls, who have navigated their freshman year successfully, this quick read is full of practical advice, reassurance, and amusing stories. It intersperses humor and silliness with real-world concerns and advice. Some teachers may be concerned by the stories the authors share-particularly of being disruptive in class-but teens will find comfort in those stories, thinking that perhaps high school is not so terrible after all. The topics include social issues such as friendship, dating, and meeting new people. Academic issues such as handling stress, dealing with failure, and having an academic plan are addressed. There is also a section offering guidance on "watching your stuff" and employment suggestions among other topics. There is a strong presence of the teen voice in this little guide to surviving the freshman year, which brings an authenticity as well as irreverence to the topic. Reviewer: Mary Ann Harlan
