Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This early reader is designed to explicitly give a role to adults who serve as companion readers with young beginning readers. Four simple stories are each preceded by a read-aloud story introduction. Hearing a story introduction is a proven strategy for beginning readers. They know what to expect as they decode unfamiliar words. General guidance for caregivers is provided in the front of the book concerning a child getting "stuck on a word." Unfortunately, the advice does not include the value of picture clues. The illustrations are colorful cartoons and do offer contextual clues. Each picture is supported by one sentence in bold print at the bottom of the page. The stories are text friendly as is appropriate for beginning reader stories. The book is part of the publisher's "Brand New Readers" series. 2002, Candlewick Press,
