Overview

Young British pianist Paul Lewis - a student and protégé of Alfred Brendel - has been hailed as one of the great new talents of the century. Preceded by a worldwide recital tour, his recording cycle of all the Beethoven piano sonatas for harmonia mundi has received phenomenal notices in the press. Both of the first two volumes were named Editor's Choice in Gramophone magazine, while Volume 1 was praised by The Times of London as "a triumph of both passion and intellect." In this fourth and final installment, the Sonatas Opp. 28 ("Pastorale"), 49, and 81 ("Les Adieux") are book-ended by the three youthful Sonatas of Opus 10 and the transcendent final triptych of Opp. 109, 110 and 111. Editorial Reviews

Gramophone
[2008 Record of the Year] There are more famous pianists in the world. Yet nobody can claim to outshine Paul Lewis in this repertoire. His Beethoven cycle may have ended on the highest of notes but there will be many new-found admirers waiting impatiently to see what he records next.
Dallas Morning News - Scott Cantrell
[Grade: B+] Lovely, thoughtful performances, but just a bit too well-behaved – too, well, British.
