All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
The third volume in the Tintner Memorial Edition from Naxos presents live performances of Beethoven's "Symphony No. 4" and Schumann's "Symphony No. 2," and each is introduced with Georg Tintner's brief remarks to the audience. While the sound quality of these performances is somewhat less than ideal, the musical merits of Tintner's interpretations are more than adequate compensation for the careful listener. Beethoven's "Symphony No. 4" was recorded in 1988, and Tintner's gentle approach is well-suited to this relaxed and sunny work. Of particular interest is his sensitive phrasing in the Adagio, which is expressive without striving for effect and forward-moving without rushing the tempo. Also noteworthy is the jovial Finale, which is played with fleetness and high spirits and without a trace of heroic storminess. Schumann's "Symphony No. 2," digitally recorded in 1991, receives an even more satisfying performance and reveals the conductor's special sympathy for this intense and quirky composer. With great skill, Tintner draws out colors from the orchestration that are too often veiled by Schumann's habitual doublings. Tintner also gives a decided bounce to rhythms, which helps define the music's character beyond conventional Teutonic heaviness. The Nova Scotia Symphony gives inspired performances of both works, no doubt motivated by Tintner's generous spirit and penetrating insights.
