    A must have album

The clearer, cleaner sound of an orchestra built with the instruments that Beethoven would have heard truly gives a listener the sound Beethoven was aiming for. The 7th and 8th Symphonies are energetic, light and full of new, fresh sound.

    Beethoven gems rediscovered

Maestro Hogwood not only worked to reproduce the sound that Beethoven heard by using late 18th century instruments, but made symphonies that have been less familiar to modern listeners (the 4th, 7th and 8th) explode in the richness of the complexity and nuances that the composer had crafted. One takes away from these performances a new ear for Ludwig's genius. These are not the trudging, overly romanticized sounds that other conductors have interpreted; rather they are the lively, bright and enthralling dances and hymns that Beethoven heard in and around Vienna and incorporated into the unique gems that each of the nice symphonies is. For the student of Beethoven, I also recommend the Complete String Quartets done by the Alexander String Quartet.
