Exquisite Dutch Diva- Gré Brouwenstijn, Soprano

This collection of arias performed by Gré Brouwenstijn astounds the intellect with the gorgeous rich color of her voice. But questions quickly surface: Why are the recordings from a half-century ago being released now in 2011? Why do audiences not know and revere this soprano from the 1940s and 50s? The exquisite melodic voice of this angelic soprano washes over the receptive mind to marvel at the quality of sound from Gré Brouwenstijn. She never reaches up to a note or to a run---her voice is already there, and strokes each note sans effort. The quality of tone is superb. The orchestral accompaniments are not even noticed. While these arias are recognizable, and indeed are favorites to some fans, no doubt the "favorites" of audiences have changed somewhat since the 1950s. Even the style of dress and pose of the artist on the cover seem "old-fashioned", although surely they were the most sophisticated of the time. The accompanying booklet provides the biography of Gré Brouwenstijn, but falls short of sufficient marketing for this breath-taking vocal talent. To inform and attract more of an audience, the cd tracks could well be listed within the booklet (in addition to the cover), with more of an explanation of the arias---some brief translations, scene descriptions, and interpretations would enrich the grateful listener. Such text may be unnecessary for the sophisticated opera scholar, but more information about the music would enhance the experience for the rest of us. The reason for this production must be to preserve the gorgeous sound of this diva's recordings for posterity. The cd presents most excellent sound, but perhaps the original recording was of less quality than easily available now. The depth, accuracy, lyrical beauty of this soprano must be preserved for the enjoyment of audiences now and in the future.
