All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Mike Herrera, Yuri Ruley, and Tom Wisniewski have been rocking the kids for Ten Years and Running, as their 2002 retrospective proudly puts it. While their third outing for A&M mostly traces the peaks and valleys of a bipolar relationship, tracks like "Play It Loud" and "Kings of Hollywood" assert the band's van-touring pride and dedication to "left coast punk rawk" [sic]. Reaching out to freshly minted suburbanite punk Benji Madden for guest vocals only solidifies the band's status as ten-and-five men. For Before Everything & After, the veteran trio has embraced the big-budget punk-pop treatment that regularly tweaks albums by junior leaguers like A New Found Glory or Madden's own Good Charlotte. Mixing from the ubiquitous Lord-Alge brothers squeegees clean each cut, plugging power chords into punchy drum fills, processing vocals to within an inch of their humanity, and putting pop accessibility way before any punk revivalist relevancy. You might recognize "Well Adjusted" from its role in a popular Pepsi commercial; in any case, its vintage Green Day crunch is powerful. The song's carefully cleansed grit will light up the LEDs on your car stereo, but if you can tell it apart from its brethren, you win a Hercules wristband. Following standard operating procedure, Before Everything's handful of rock anthems is accompanied by a midsection of pop-punk power ballads. Synths, treated piano, surging string sections, and robot vocal processing all dress up "Don't Walk Away" and "Quit Your Life," where Herrera gives his emotional perspective on a bicoastal romance.

    ok, but could do without

i'm a huge MXPX fan, but this is too soft for them. it sounds too much like a bunch of backstreet boys songs put to faster music. i liked the older stuff, that was louder and faster. its ok, bu titcould be skipped.

    brutal, the worst from mxpx

This is a terrible CD. MxPx worst by a mile. They've sold out so bad. If you want a good MxPx album buy either slowly going the way of the buffalo or Pokinatcha.

    A Step Back...

MXPX is awesome as always. But Before Everything & After is more "pop" and less "punk". It's more immature than their other albums - like they're targeting 12-15 year olds. With a few exceptions, the passion and deepness just isn't there. I know that bands have to go through changes, but I personally feel this is a step back rather than forward.

    MXPX RAWKS

This CD totally rawks! Next to Life in General this is their best CD! And to everyone who says they've sold out... Screw you! They have not sold out, they're just trying to get some more attention - who wouldn't in their position? They've been doing this for over ten years now and have paved the way for many bands - Blink, New Found Glory, and many, many others... these bands were once OPENING for MXPX! I was very impressed with the new sound, yet the subtle hints of their old stuff made this CD really shine! I listen to this CD all the time; whenever I'm in the car. I even blare it on the stereo at home! (I don't care what the neighbors think... this is a great CD to listen to!)

The Best yet??? I think so!

Wow. That is the only word one can describe the album with. The fresh, clean, up beat, up tempo sound is a must for MxPx fans! Yet, the boys still stay true to their Bremerton punk roots. The additions of Kris Roe and Jordan Pundik really add to this cd, a must have for all MxPxers!

This band always gets better as the years keep rolling by.

Amazing album, couldn't take it out of the cd player if i wanted to. Pick up the cd and play it over and over again, because this is a great record. Not many artists can pull off the title of a "great record" but MXPX goes above and beyond the call of duty to deliver the best they have to offer to all of their present and future fans.

    Worth Buying!!!

If you listen to music like The Ataris and Good Charlotte, I think you will definitely fall in love with this album! I wasn't an MxPx fan before, but when I bought this album, my mind changed so quick, it's not even funny! This would make a great gift for anyone who loves "pop-punk" music.

    MXPX ROCKS HARDER THAN EVER

MxPx are still the kings of "left coast punk rawk" and they don't want you to forget it! If you're an old fan or just shopping, there's something on this Enhanced CD for everyone! If you're a random shopper looking for cool bands to listen to, you'll like MxPx if you like an energetic punk rock beat with catchy pop hooks and personal lyrics. Life in General used to be my favorite record my MxPx, but Before Everything & After has definitely made it to #1. This CD is a perfect combination of lyrics and styles to please any critic, even if you're not normally a fan of this genre of music. Also, if you like bands like New Found Glory and Good Charlotte who have gotten reputations for being too "trendy" or "pop," it will please you that MxPx have lent them some credibility by having Jordan from NFG and Benji from GC - who helped MxPx rock the Honda Civic Tour this summer - on guest vocals. The excellent Halo Friendlies also make a guest appearance. For people who have liked MxPx in the past but are afraid they'll go the way of Blink-182 and pander to the teenaged audience, there is no fear of that! The band's content and style has matured along with them, so you're not stuck in a time warp hearing songs about high school from the same band YOU listened to when YOU were still there. In all, Before Everything & After deserves *FIVE STARS* because there is something for everyone, even if you're new to the scene!

This album is definitely worth your money

This is without a doubt the most mature effort from this great band to date. The whole album is very upbeat and lighthearted. Even the classic songs about heartbreak (take "Brokenhearted" for example) have a very positive vibe. Musically they're exploring a whole new territory. They still sound as tight as always, but the addition of keys and strings on a few songs make this album very rich in texture. The song that most clearly shows the band's growth in this sense is probably "Quit Your Life," and the background vocals create a very overwhelming atmosphere. Although the sound is new throughout the whole album, there are tracks that resemble the more traditional MxPx style, like "Well Adjusted," which is a very catchy tune full of energy, "More Everything," and "You Make Me, Me." And of course, the first single off this album, "Everything Sucks (When You're Gone)," deserves much credit as well, for being a very well crafted song with a nice and catchy melody. All in all, this is a very solid album, and I have no doubt that we'll continue to enjoy great music from this ever-evolving band. Congratulations to MxPx on another job well done.

    Great but not like MXPX

I'd have to say this is a great CD but it does not sound like MXPX. Theire style has changed alot and that can be seen in this album. If you like this CD i would recommend bands such as Good Charlotte, Mest, and Yellowcard. Once again this CD is great but has lost the MXPX style

The time to hesitate is through!

BUY THIS ALBUM!! If you are an old skool MXPX fan, this is a must have for your collection. If you have just heard of MXPX this album is perfect and easy-listening for your first run of the 3 boys from Bremerton. They are older, wiser, married and have gone through the up's and down's of life that actually makes their music genuine and personal and definitely easy to relate to. They experiment with news sounds that suit them perfectly, they have fun, and they can be serious too. This is an AMAZING cd that will be stuck in my player months!!

    Mxpx is still good

Although MxPx's new cd sounds similar to the bands who have followed them, i must say, this release is awesome! I'm just in love with this album, I recommend it to anyone and everyone!

ALways worth more than you pay for

MxPx just keep improving. In their lastest album they push themselves to a higher level. Adding new sounds and keeping true to their punk roots the deliver an album that will be in my cd player for a long long time. Over the years MxPx have mananged to keep a solid fan base and keep producing quality records. Before , Everything, and After moves the guys to another level. Check it out to hear songs about love, faith and growing up, they have something everyone can realate to, which has kept them strong 10 and running.
