"Before Her Eyes" is not usually the kind of book I read, but I agreed to review this book as a nice break from the usual fantasy and science fiction books I review. I thought it would be a quick and easy read of solving a murder mystery in a small town, but I was wrong. This book is so much more than that and it made me do a lot of thinking about how we all judge people based on our own perceptions and biases of who we think they are when we look at them. The story revolves around Sherriff Dove Connelly, a good moral stand-up kind of guy who battles his own inner demons while trying to solve the murder of his friend, Fritz, the local store owner, and the kidnapping of Tessa Bradley, a local socialite, from the scene of the crime. Throughout the investigation that covers 48 hours, everything that Dove thought he knew about the people of his mountain enclave is challenged, warped and then twisted back into a new slot. Even Dove himself must undergo this torturous journey if he ever wants to have peace and happiness with his wife and child. The author lets the story unfold through two viewpoints - third person to follow Dove and the investigation and first person for Tessa Bradley. It is Tessa's voice that draws you in, haunts you, makes you listen to her, and leaves you a shadow of former yourself when she's done with you. Her beauty blinds all who see her, but no one really sees her, no one really knows her, all except for one, and he's never met her before. Dove is determined to find Tessa not because she's a beautiful woman, but because she is a woman in need and that's his job. This book makes you think and I like that. I highly recommend it, but make sure you carve out the time to read it because once you start, you won't want to put it down until the last word is read.

That and the little sub-plots that keep the tension up and have you wondering what is going on clear to the end! Great read, buy it now! Looking to add her other books to my list.

This is a solid thriller with a compelling and twisting plot. Readers will likely be sympathetic to all the characters whether they end up admiring, loving, or hating them. Forster is a gifted wordsmith. The Nook version of this book is marred, however, by an atrocious editing job. The text is truncated by the outer margins making some important words (like "not") invisible. As in other books from this publisher, there are also numerous typos. I suspect that e-books are cranked out by translating the paper version by computer with no further editing. Rebecca Forster deserves so much better from the publisher.

I found "Before Her Eyes" very ingeniously engaging, believable in plot as well as the rich character development throughout. You find yourself guessing what the outcome will be but you will continue to read on because it becomes evident that things are not what they seem. Rebecca gives an attention-grabbing ebb and flow to the writing style that keeps your attention throughout as you find yourself right next to Sheriff Connelly helping him along his path to find Tessa alive, her kidnappers, murder suspects as well as encounter corruption along the way that threatens to deter him from doing his job. You won't even begin to know how it will end until every last word is read.

The murder mystery/cop thriller genre can get really stale but Ms. Forster's treatment here is anything but! Characters are beautifully constructed, each one with enough human baggage to leave you thinking, each person's motivations ring true and add to the mystery, and the ending is, well...down right Hitchcockian.

I read all 595 pages. There was nothing in this story that grabbed me. There was no suspense, romance, the dialogue was very standard. I didn't connect with the story or the characters. The author flitted from one character to another without giving me a glimpse of who they really were. I thought Tessa's character could have been better developed other than her sorrowful life. The author could have given this story more emotion and a more vivid imagination, something the reader could hold on to while trying to read all of the 500 plus pages.

I like the way Ms. Forster writes. I've read her other books dealing with the same characters. I loved the strong woman lead!! Easy to read, difficult to put down! Want to read all her books!!
Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I've read several books by this author and this is one of her absolute best! Rich characters, a fast-paced story and a remarkable ending that will have you rereading half the book to figure out why you missed all the clues. Rebecca Forster frequently has me staying up late to finish her books, but this one really stayed with me. Fully developed characters, vivid descriptions and a brilliantly creative story. Download this now... it'll be the best $1.99 you've ever spent.
