I read through this book with my 7 1/2 year old to explain to her where babies come from. I thought it was done very tastefully, and explained sex as an act to be done within marriage. I did not think the illustrations were embarrassing at all. The only illustrations of genitalia were of children getting dressed or undressed. I found this book far less embarassing to read through than the classic 'Where did I come From?' They teach the correct terminology for male and female body parts, which all children have to learn at some point anyway, and give a basic description of the mechanics of sex. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to give their children the straight truth, but is afraid they will find it uncomfortable. Also, this is a religiously based book, but would be appropriate for anyone who believed in God, not just Christians.
The book tells about intercourse, so if you're uncomfortable with that, you won't like the book. However, I believe that most 8 year olds who are exposed to other children or siblings will learn about intercourse whether you think it's appropriate or not. Our wise pastor asked, 'would you rather them hear it from you, or from their schoolmate?'. This convinced me that 8 years old is not too young! We used it for our oldest daughter to initiate discussion (when she was 8), and it was a positive experience. I plan to use it for my other children.
I was looking for a series on Sex Education to help parents teach children about the changes their body goes through as they grow. The first book in this series was acceptable, but book 2, Before I Was Born, was basically a repeat of book 1, with more detail about sex and childbirth. After review by myself, our Childrens Pastor and our Ministry Team we felt this was to much information for a 5-8 year old. The series we currently have (which is out of print & falling apart) explains the steps of puberty and the changes the body goes through in a scientific manner. As an adult, I was embarrassed by some of the illustrations in this series, and was not even comfortable with my 13 year old reading this book. The Final Conclusion, we were not able to put this series in our Christian School/Church Library.
